• Just got amp/sub installed...problem

I just got home from getting my amp and subwoofer installed, first I'll lay out the specs:

Amp: MTX Thunder801d
Sub: Alpine 10" Type R
Box: MTX Thunderform

First off, that sub POUNDS. When I first got it, the gain was up so much that my radio was only at like 3 volume and I thought my head was going to explode. I got all that adjusted so its just right. As I was driving home, I noticed that sometimes my amp just randomly turns off. Then maybe a few minutes later it'll come back on again with no problems. I can't really make sense as to why. I'm probably going to take it back tomorrow and see whats up, I was just wondering if any of you stereo guys had any ideas for things that could be causing it?

Overheating? Maybe try opening the car up, pointing a fan at it and only play it at very low volumes. See how long before it shuts off.....if it does. Is there any type of protection light coming on?

I can't see any protection light. The light is either on steady or off. Even if I turn the car off and back on again it won't turn back on. At one point it'll just turn back on and start pounding full strengh. At one point I noticed before it cut out I heard my sub make kind of a "crackle pop" noise and then it shut off, came back on about 5 minutes later and has been ok ever since.

Check your fuse. I had some weird occurance with my fuse where it blew but it still would power on and off. It was really odd. Also when your amp has no power, get a multimeter and test to see that you are getting power to the amp.

Thanks for the help once again Matt, I'll give that a shot. The fuse looked ok, but I think I'll check it again tomorrow in the daylight.

Check that all your connectors are connected good. (Ground, remote turn-on wire, power.) I'm assuming that you used connectors and not electrical tape to connect all your wires... I'm not being a smart-a here.

Check that there isn't any crimps all your wires.

Did you sand it down well (your ground point for the amp)?

Check your amp's terminals, that the screws are in tight and that the wires are in the connectors good(I'm assuming you used connectors here).

I had a similar prob before, it turned out to be my remote wire. I used cheap wire that cut when I crimped the connector to it, and it was turning on and off when I hit pot holes in the road.

Yep, problem solved. It was a loose connection on the remote turn on wire. Now that sub is pounding like crazy. I gotta say, those 10" type r's are insane...I love it. Thanks for the help guys.
