• need help on deciding what switch to use....

I want to be able to hook my air/fuel guage up to my o2 sensors, but I want to be able to switch between the 2 to see what they are doing. I heard about this and I am very interested in this idea.

I don't know what kind of switch to use though. I know my buddy has a switch where you click it one way and his low lights come on, switch it the other way and all 4 off-road lights are on. His low lights are part of his off-road lights, but I am assuming I need a switch in which I can go from one to the other.

Please let me know what kind of switch/relay/combo I may need to do this.

Thanks,
Chris

Here is the easiest way that I can think to do it.

1)Get a switch, one that has two contacts.
2)Get a standard automotive relay (12V, of course)
3)Disconnect battery.
4)Find a switched 12V source (radio, remote turn on lead)
5)Tap the 12V source and run a wire to one contact on the switch
6)Run another wire from the other contact to pin 85 or 86 on the relay
7)Which ever pin you did NOT use in #6 run to a ground.
8)Run a wire from the guage input to pin 30 on the relay.
9)Tap both O2 sensors.
10)Run a wire from one 02 sensor to pin 87 or 87a on the relay.
11)Which ever pin you did NOT use on #10 run a wire from it to the other 02 sensor.
12)Check all wiring, connect battery, look for sparks.
13)Take a break.
If I did my schematics correctly this should work fine. Just flip the switch and it will read the other 02 sensor. If you do not understand relays just go buy one and see if there are any instructions with it. Its not hard at all. Just look for the pins I mentioned and it will be easy. Hope this helps.

So does the switch in turn make the relay power on? I noticed that there is no direct power for the relay. I am use to using power/ground/remote lead to device to turn on/remote to switch.

I drew it out, all looks good. So basicly with this relay idea, I would always be monitoring 1 o2 sensor that would stay on all the time (as if you hooked it up to just 1 sensor to begin with) and the second one could be controled by a switch.

Please let me know if this is correct or not.

Thanks,
Chris

I have off-road lights in my truck, 2 pair, and there are 2 switches in the cab. The relays require the each switch for its pair to be on as well as the high beams. If all 4 are on, and I flip the high beams off, all 4 go off and I go to low beams, or I can use the switches to control the inside pair or outside pair as long as the high beams are on. The reasons this setup requires relays is becuase 1) there are 2 sources of input (the high beams and the switch) and 2, the KC's draw 25 amps per pair, which means each switch weould need 14 awg wire...... having the relays to control the high-current lets the wires for the switch remain a smaller 22 awg.

What you're talking about doing should be easier than what S.O. 98 discribed. I'm sure they make (but the ability to find one might be a different story) a 2-way 3-prong switch that will do the following with prong A, B, and C. I hope you follow me

Assuming the O2 signal wire has 1 signal wire, you could put O2-1 signal wire to pin A, O2-2 signal to pin C, and the guage signal input to pin B. Just make sure that in position 1 the switch combines pins A&B and separates B&C, and position 2 combines B&C and separates A&B. If the O2 sensors have 2 signal wires, is one of them a ground? If so, then the ground is common anyway and you won't need to worry about it. If this totally confused you I drew a diagram on a post-it so I can scan that and post it if you need Let me know.

With a 2 way 3 prong switch you should be able to do this without relays, which will simplify it greatly. If you can't find a switch, then the realy way S.O. 98 described will work too.

Good luck!

-Mike

The three way switch MTMike is talking about should be similar to the switch people use on the 3.8L manual fan switch. It has two different "on" positions and "off", with separate contacts for each on position. I have seen people buy them from Radio Shack, so you should be able to find one.

I think I see how MTMike is explaining it and it does sound a lot easier that way. I just learned how relays work and how to wire them up so I guess thats why I jumped to that setup. I have no idea how all of those SPST and DPST and DPDT switches work so thats another reason I didnt bring them up. I have the manual fan switch in my car that I wired myself. It is a center off switch that has six contacts on the back of it. If I didnt have a diagram to go by though I wouldve never got it right.

Spunger, you are right when you said that if you go with my setup you will always be monitoring an O2 sensor. Click here to learn about relays and how they work. This might give you a little better understanding of what I am saying.

not a lot of time to post on this, but I second (or is it third or fourth now) the idea of the relay. The relay was my first instinct response for this post when I first started reading it.

Just choose the O2 sensor you want to monitor MOST of the time on the at rest (center of the relay) connection and the other one on the one you want to monitor when you turn on the switch. You'll figure it out pretty quickly when you read up on the information provided. Good luck and let us know what you decide to use.

DrMilhouse, so nice to see that you agree with me on something after bashing me on ls1.com. Remember this http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?s=de10fe6c338379942151cf00c82700e 9&postid=933900#post933900

I just picked up all the wires I need etc.. to wire the switch up to the relay. I have some of those things laying around which I like using anyways. It is probably more runs of wires that I don't really need, but oh well, things go quick.

Thanks for the help guys,
Chris

That was directed towards the person who was saying that remote start was lame on a v8 but not lame on a v6 his was like the second post.

Terribly sorry Dr Milhouse. I posted a follow-up on the thread apologizing and explaining my reason for snapping at you. My reply on here about you agreeing with me was just a humorous response, not trying to be sarcastic. Sorry again.
