• Former alpine lover gives pioneer a try (and loves it!!)

Ok, I have been in to car audio, video, and computing for well over 5 years now.. and i have had about 5 different systems.. but all with alpine HU's..

my crowning achivement was my 1000w blaupunkt PA powered system with an alpine hu, boston pros, and a 10" solobaric stealth box style mounted in a custom fiber glass enclosure.. but that got stolen!!

Anyway, I have since been working boston pros up front, and old *** (97) busted alpine HU, and no SUB!
i decided to pull the sub and run a pair of kicker 6-3/4 midrange drivers (i dont rember the name but they are discintinued).. this is all powered by another blaupunkt PA 500W 4 channal amp..

anyway i have had this busted *** HU for like a year and hated every minute of it because it was old had no features, and the back lighting was broken..

So, the other day i was hanging out at myer emco a kick *** local shop that i have been working with for a few years now.. and they had a premier deh-p740mp for sale!! jsut over $200 i was like.. WTF.. its alot cheeper then the alpine stuff and it looks "fun"..

I installed it and i am amased!! i never really looked at the pioneers but DAM! they are packed with all kinds of goodies and allow WAY MORE tuning then even alot of the high end alpines!! for less money!!

I was currently working on a project to build my own computer based cd/mp3/dvd/navigation/wardriving system using mini-itx hardware and a xenarc touch screen.. but.. i wont want to part with this head unit.. its really is fantastic! i will need to find a way to intagrate all of that stuff into my dash.. lol.. ohh well.. back to the drawing boards..

anyway, to all the alpine lovers out there.. take a look at he pioneers next time you are shopping for a HU the features are verry nice.. i have owned 4 alpines in the past (all in the $300-400 range) and i liked then but man.. this pioneer takes the cake.. I dont like the way it "looks" as much as the alpines, but.. the cool display with the animations makes up for it.. and they do look alot better in the car then at the show room or online..

anyway just letting my car audio presence be known, expect to see me over here wrecking the house more often.

later,
~Bill

Cool. Glad you are happy with your new H/U! But which model Alpine did you have? I hate to be the bringer of bad news but Alpine's head units easily have more valuable features then most of the pioneers. Take the Alpine 9811 for example. Goes for about $230 brand new on-line. It plays CD/CDR/MP3 discs, has three sets of 4V RCAs, a motorized faceplate and 4-channel time correction.... among other things. Simply unbeatable for that price. MANY of the Pioneer's don't have the time correction feature at all. Actually, I think only the 9400mp and 940mp have it.... Anyway, I'm not trying to be a d!ck and bring down your new toy. I love Pioneer! I own a Pioneer now and plan to buy the 940mp in about a month. Just wanted to let everyone that reads this to know what exactly is out there.

yeah it has some kind of ghetto time correction that not really adjustable on mine.. it plays mp3's and has 4 volt..

but on top of the alpines it has that parametric EQ witch is real nice.. and it has alot of other little tweeks and features i found helpfull also.. like the signal leval adjsutment for addjusting the volume beteen sources so they are all the same.. you know how cd play lowder of alpines then then radio and aux inputs.. this way you can make them all leval..

I really miss the motorized display not that i used it for the angle features.. but the flip down action on the pioneer is kinda ghetto and requieres you to push the interal eject button (just one extra step) and its kinda a pain to get it lined up..

the last repectibal alpine i had was a 2001 model.. it was the blue one! i dont rember then number.. but i belive they ony sold 2 blue buttoned hu's that year.. the one i had and the f1 status (drool)..

and about the 9811.. its a nice unit.. but over priced in my opinion.. its like $100 more and the only benifit i see if the time more persisce time correction.. i was pissed at alpine becuase you cant get a head unit from them for under $270 with a variable cross over anymore (i like to run my subs bandpass using the amp X-over in conjuntion with the hu's).. i think they are letting thier popularity get to their heads..

(btw i dident take any offence to your post i infact appriciate the insight)
