I looked at the LCD ones, but the only time I'm ever worried about my car is when I'm at work, and my cell phone wont even work in the building, so I know the transmitter wouldn't either.
I went with the Viper 800esp, it offered a few more features than that LCD one, but ended up I don't use most of them anyways. But it was a lot cheaper than the LCD at the time to.
As far as install goes, I had a tough time finding a place that would install it, without me actually buying one from them. Had a guy at one place who would do it on the side for $100, but I decided to not worry about the warranty and ended up putting it in myself.

I went with a Viper 800ESP also. Cost me $125 off ebay about a year ago and I installed it myself.

I'd say that's probly the best explanation I've seen. Except for one error...

The have to steal your WHOLE car... then you MIGHT get $2500... or you might also get your deductable... whichever is lower.

But on a more serious note... If you go to www.viper.com on there they have downloadable manuals for all the alarms, which does a okay job at explaining what it all means.

Missed your original questions... Basically the biggest difference, that I found, from some of the others is the amount of optional sensors that can be hooked up to it. (Which is refered to as "Zones") Glass break/sound sensors, proximity sensors, tilt sensors, I know I'm forgetting atleast a couple others.
As far as getting into the door like on your brother's car, that would be covered by the door input trigger (or something like that) on the alarm, which is really no more than a wire that detects when the dome light comes on. Or it could also be detected by an optional sound sensor.
As far as features, most, if not all, will detect when the door is opened. Most come with a shock sensor(when you beat on the window it will trigger the alarm). Door lock/unlock outputs (keyless entry) Trunk pop output. Those really are the basic essentials to an alarm, in my opinion. Then you get into starter kill, vehicle recovery system, more zones then you will ever need.
Basically check out that site, I'm sure it'll probly do a much better job than me trying to explain it all from memory.
And you will probably also notice that most alarms are all made by DEI.
