Does anyone know of a good radar/laser detector? Are they pretty reliable at detecting radar guns?

The Beltronics line is good, and the top of the line Escort 8500 is good. I wouldn't run anything else besides those.

    www.radartest.com IIRC has good tests

It really depends on your budget. If you have a few hundred dollars lying around the Valentine One would be your best bet. I have a Cobra w/360 degree protection and it seems to work really well. They do well against all radars except instant on radars (radars that automatically come on when you get within X feet of the radar). My detector has saved me a couple of times though, so I say get one.

I've got a Cobra 10-band (think it's 9210) that cost $75 ... it's a cheapie because it doesn't give you a tremendous amount of advanced warning when you're being gunned. If you're doing more than 20 over the speed limit and it starts climbing past "2" (on a scale of 5), you're probably not going to be able to slow down fast enough to save yourself. ... It has saved me a couple of times though, when I haven't been excessively speeding. Guess you've gotta go with what you can afford.
