• dual ? antenna & head unit

ok, this is two questtions in one post.

1) my antenna has stopped moving. it wont go up and down with the radio power. the motor is still working, its kicking in and out, but the antenna is stuck. i cant even push it down. the question is; is there an easy way to fix this or do i need to get a new power antenna? im running the remote for my amp off of the antenna, so i dont want to just stick a regular antenna in there.

2) after a year of death spasms my stock monsoon
head unit is starting to die. what would be a good head unit to replace it with? i would like to keep the steering wheel controls and the factory amps. i also would like a h.u. that takes up most, if not all the space that would be left.

thx in advance

Unless you really want to upgrade, you could just pick up a used Monsoon head unit. I think they're around $100, maybe more. You won't have to deal with getting your steering wheels controls to work with aftermarket adapters, and it matches the car better than any aftermarket one.

1) Sounds like your antenna is toast. Your best bet is to buy another one from the dealer. I think they are about $50, which is cheaper then most aftermarket ones. Trust me, I paid $100 for mine. :(
2) There are no aftermarket head units that will allow you to keep your steering wheel controls. Sorry. But you can buy an adapter. I think it's like $50 and called PAC SWI-X. I think. How much would you be willing to spend for an aftermarket head unit? Is this one out of your price range?

do i have to have a part # when i go to the dealer? as far as h.u. cost, i've got about 300-400 to drop on a good h.u. the only things im really worried about are the factory amps and the wheel controls (i've grown to like them) a big plus would be filling up all the space left.

thx in advance

btw, its a '99 firebird dont no if that makes a difference on h.u. fitment

hmm...you can keep your steering wheel controls for most of the headunits...its just a simple adapter...I was looking at the new pioneer flip out screen (touch screen) and almost bought it instead of my ground effects but I would lose my cd changer...wheel controls would still work fine...go to a small shop, not big like best buy or anything...and ask them Im sure they could find an adapter or jury rig it so it would work... ;)

I bought my antenna from www.rksport.com . It was $99. It includes a detachable antenna shaft so if I bend or break it again, I can just replace the shaft. But I'm almost certain that the factory antenna is around $50-$60. I could be wrong though.

For that price range I recommend the Alpine 9813. It's actually less then what you wanted to spend, so that's a plus. It features a motorized faceplate, 3 sets of 4V RCAs, plays MP3 and WMA files and has 6-channel time correction. An absolute steal for that price! To get anything much better then that, look to spend around $500. Spend the money you save an the PAC SWI-X so you can retain your steering wheel controls. You also mentioned that you would like the unit to "fill up the space left". I think you mean a 1.5 din size head unit? Pioneer and Alpine make a few decent ones, but the good ones are not cheap. PLUS they still don't have all the features of the 1 din head units. Why is that anyway? Anybody? That Alpine is EASILY your best bet for your price range. Any aftermarket head unit will play with the monsoon system. No special mods. But if you intend to add a sub/amp IN ADDITION to the monsoon amp, you will need an adapter. If you plan on ditching the amp all together.... well then you wouldn't have the monsoon system anymore now would you?! :D This is a good thread to start you reading.
