• Q for people with components...

A: where do you have your crossover mounted?
B: how far/close does the crossover HAVE to be mounted?
C: what component set do you have?

Thanks,
-Steve

I have Infinity comps. There is no distance limit between crossover and speaker/tweeter. I stuck mine in the dash and ran just the wires through that black door boot thingy. You know what I'm talking about. ;)

A. - Soon to be in the driver's side cubby hole.
B. - Like firebird311 said, there really is no limit. However, the shorter the path length of the wires, the less chance of interference you have. Interference is probably not something you'll have to worry about though.
C. - Diamond Audio Hex S600s.

Ive got the crossover for the drivers side sitting on top of the panel in front on your knees when your in the driver seat. When I pull that panel off it just falls, nothing really holding it. On the passengers side if you take that kickpanel off that runs the length of the door there is a perfect little slot that holds a regular size crossover. Thats where mine is. I should have some pics up finally today. I will see if I have one of it.

I have Kicker RS6 components. There not the best you can get but I like them for the most part. The only reason I got them was because they were on eBay brand new for 200 bucks. They retailed at 400-450.

My crossover's are mounted in my dash on the driver side. I think it would be cool to have them on 'display' in the trunk, but then you would have to run twice the wire to the front of the car, but i think it could be worth it when done right.

I have the rockford fanatic x component set right now, but i really want a set of image dynamic components....eh...one day

i bought focal 165K's, they sound amazing. I got them for $190 slightly used, they are about $400 or so retail i think, and you can get them on ebay for $250 + $30 shipping i think.

If the line running to the speaker is amped, make sure you install the crossover befor the amp, so that way your not amping any unwanted frequency's.

How are you supposed to put a component crossover that only accepts speaker wire before an amp?? Before the amp there are RCA cables. I do have an MTX crossover that accepts RCA input before my amp but I have the crossover for my Kicker components after the amp near the speaker.

Also, I got those pics up of my car and system if you guys wanna check it out. Links in the sig.

I have kicker resolution components. I have the crossovers mounted in the door panels. In the area where the arm rests are in the door panels, it's hollow with room to use on the inside of the door panels. It was a perfect fit. I also have some others mounted behind my amp rack. I've never liked showing those things, I've always thought it looks kinda lame.

You can use an active crossover instead of the passive units that come with the component sets. But that requires an amp channel for both tweeter and mid for a total of four, instead of just two channels. However, if you are purchasing a quality pair of component speakers, the supplied passive crossovers generally contain not only high quality components, but some matching/tuning between the tweeter and mid. If you were to go with an active crossover, you would need to do some additional tuning to verify proper crossover frequency and level between the two drivers. Not really worth the headache unless you are really going all out.

It is important to use an active crossover on subs however, either external or built-in on the amp. If a full range signal (20-20K hz) is amped and then run through a low-pass passive crossover, only the low freq (20-100hz) is passed to the speaker, there is alot of wasted energy. But if you use an active crossover, only the 20-100hz frequencies are amplified, and all of the XXXXwatts are used for those frequencies.

I wasnt even thinking about the crossovers that are built into the amp when I made that last post. I knew about active and passive crossovers. I have an active MTX crossover before my amp. The RCA's plug into it and then you run RCAs from it to the amp. I only got the crossover because you can fine tune the crossover settings. On my MTX amp it just has HP, LP and FR. Doesnt really give you alot to work with.

I didn't mean to imply that you weren't familiar with passive and active crossovers, just to point out that a "crossover" could be put before an amp. His wording does make it sound like he's talking about putting a passive crossover before an amp though, which wouldn't work as you stated before.

You can used both to tune your system. Many passive crossovers do not have a high pass filter for the midrange speaker, so it is forced to play down in sub territory if used alone :( I have used a high pass filter, either a separate active crossover or onboard the amp, to block low frequencies from the component set, and then used the included passive crossover to separate the signal between the mid and tweet. Works well, and allows the midrange to play much louder without distorting.
