• need help wiring power windows

i'm going to be getting my power windows soon. i ordered the parts almost a week ago and i'm trying to figure out how i want to have them work.

would there be enough current to run the motors on a constant 12v source without killing the battery? or do i really need to have it on a switched 12v source so that the windows only work when the key is in the on position and when the car is running?

i think it would be really cool for the windows to work all the time, even without the key in, but i wanted to see if anyone knew if it was even possible.

    thanks

Really, it's entirely up to you if you want to use Constant or Switched power. If you went with a constant source, the only time the motors would use/drain power would be when you pressed the buttons to go up or down. You'd have to roll the window up and down over and over for quite some time before the battery would go dead. The only bad thing I would see about using a Constant source would be that someone could slide something between the glass and rubber seal and press down on the buttons to roll down the window. Regardless with what source you go with, make sure you use a fairly heavy gauge wire since window motors draw a decent amount of amps.

Is this an aftermarket power window kit or is everything GM?

Why don't you use the accessory power. That way you can use them whenever the car is in the acc/run position and after you shut the car off before you open the door.

If i were you i would run a wire directly to the battery of something around 12 gauge because those power windows do draw a lot of current.

First, who would know his car is using constant power? Other then his friends.... Second, they could hit the power lock button just as easily. Or even without power locks, it's not that hard... I'd use constant power, but it's up to you. Turn off the car and forget to roll up the windows enough times...and you'll wish you had!

Technically the "unlock" position of the power lock button eventually turns off whereas the "lock" position will still work. But yeah, I completely agree with you that if someone wants in his car bad enough, even manual locks won't slow them down too much.
