The front left Monsoon speaker in my 2001 Camaro blew and it was going to cost over $100 bucks to replace at the Chevy dealer. So I decided to change them out myself.
I'm not very experienced with cars or anything, but I have installed CD players and new speakers before. I also looked up a step by step picture diagram on taking off most of the door to get to the speaker.
I determined which set of speaker wires were the low to mid level signal (they come from the amp) and which were the high level (for tweeters coming from the head unit).
For those who don't know, the Monsoon speakers have 4 wires that attach to each speaker. I cut these off from the speaker to remove it.
I bought new Pioneer TS-A168OR 4-way 220w max 6.5" speakers. I'm not to familiar with quality of speakers, but the dude at Best Buy said they were very good.
I sealed off the 2 tweeter wires, and attached the 2 wires coming from the amp to my new speaker. I screwed the speaker in and reconnected the battery power. I put in a CD.
The speaker sounded like crap kinda. When I would twist the balance knob to the right and turned on just the original Monsoon speaker on the right side it sounds so much crisper, with better bass and louder.
Its taken quite a bit of work, and I'm kind of bummed about it, but I'm probably going to take the Pioneer out, buy some Monsoon speakers on Ebay and install it.
What do you guys think? Any tips or ideas? How can I make it sound better?
