  • Speaker problem - driver's side

    Original Message:
How many speakers came from the factory for a '96 Firebird? When I bought the car, the previous owner said there are a total of 10 speakers. The ones I can see are 2 on each door (well, one speaker and one tweeter on each door), 2 behind each front seat, I think 2 on the dash, and 2 in the trunk on either side. She said she got the 10 speakers special, but I'm not sure if she was just BSing me or what. I'll get some pics of where they all are.

Also, the whole driver's side doesn't work. The speakers don't put out any sound, which I'm thinking is the fault of the factory deck (or some wiring issues). I'm gonna take the radio off and check the connections soon.
Now that I have the first problem solved, I figured I'd edit this post just asking about the driver's side speakers. What would cause this problem? I turn the balance all the way to the driver's side, and I can only hear the tweeter on the door working. All other speakers on the driver's side don't work. I'm not too smart on stereo systems and all that, so would this be the fault of the head unit, or the amp? I'm pretty sure its not the speakers, because so many of them are out.

    There should be:
A total of 4 speakers up front (2 speakers per door).
A total of 2 speakers where the rear passenger's sit (6-3/4" woofer on each side).
A total of 4 speakers wayy in the back of the hatch. (1 tweeter and 1 midrange located on both the Left and Right side).

There are no speakers in the dash of 4th generation Firebirds.

For more information, click on where it says "Modification Encyclopedia" way up above on this site.

This may sound silly but remove the grills and look to see if the speakers are even there. The previous owner of my car had removed most of my factory speakers and left nothing but dangling wires. Even if those speakers were blown, they still should put out some kind of sound or noise. (either very distorted or lots of buzzzing).

If all the speakers are indeed there, then start by checking the basics. Remove the headunit and make sure the plugs are in tight and that none of the factory wiring back there has been cut. (Someone hacked off my factory plug and poorly wired it back together) (The plastic trim around the A/C controls and radio just pulls off and there should be a few 7mm/torx bolts holding the stereo in.) (note: Make sure the "Theft-Lock" on the stereo isn't activated or know the code before you unplug anything) Also, remove the spare tire and take a quick look at the factory amp. Make sure the plug is in tight and that none of the wiring is cut.

If still no luck you could try switching some of the speakers from Left to Right. Some easy ones to try first would be on the sides where the rear passengers sit. The grills should pop off and you can take the woofers out and switch em....Turn on the radio and see what happens. That should help narrow things down.
