  • best way to "hard wire" a radar detector

Hey everybody. I have this old cobra radar detector, and i want to hard wire it to my car, so i don't have any messy wires in my cigarette adapter.
What is the best way to hard wire it in. where are the best wires to hook up to so it turns off after the keys are out of the ignition.
I attempted going through the back of the cigarette lighter, but that damn console was in the way, and i have no way of "easily" removing it.
    Thanks,
    Ron

Go off the radio wire. I went up through the A-pillar and down right about at the rear view mirror. That way my radar detector is up and not in my direct vision. Looks very clean and can't be seen from outside the car unless you are really looking for it.

There are many different places you can tap into to get a (+)12volt 'switched' source. Probably one of the easiest places would be to tap into the wires that power the stereo. On the wiring harness that plugs into the back of the stereo, use the Yellow wire for the (+) on the Radar Detector. For the ground, you can either ground to a bolt that's attached to metal somewhere under the dash or simply tap into the Black wire on the stereo's main wiring harness.

note 1: There are two yellow wires on the stereo's main wiring harness. One of the yellow wires is the (+) 'switched' 12volts and the other yellow wire is used for a speaker wire. The correct yellow wire you want to use will be right next to an Orange wire on the plug, or Pin# 9 on the plug.

note 2: To remove the factory stereo, 1st pull off the plastic trim piece that surrounds the A/C controls and the stereo. Pull in the corners of the trim piece since that's where the clips are located. Once that's off you be able to see the 7mm bolts that hold in the stereo. Make sure you know the "theft lock" code or deactivate it before you disconnect power to the stereo.

thats what I'v always done except I have mine close to the a-piller and not the rear view mirror I just don't like the way it looks sitting right there but thats just my personal opinion
