So, the flip-down face on my Sony headunit was having trouble - it wasn't catching in the up position.
Turns out it was a simple fix - a few small screws holding the catch on the headunit in place were loose. The faceplate was actually contacting one, and that pushed the catch mechanism back (out of reach) whenever I tried to put the faceplate in place. There were at least half a dozen little screws on the head unit and faceplate that tightened by at least half a turn when I went over them. Catches and locks like a charm now.
So, simple lesson: if you're having any troubles with your faceplace, look for loose screws first. You probably won't even have to pull the unit out of the dash.
