• Blasted Factory Monsoon Speakers!

Well, I am currently doing an interior color swap from tan to Leather Dark Gray.

To the Point.. I was replacing the Sail Panels, the Panels underneath the rear trunk hatch. (The new ones didn't come with speakers) I was going to put the speakers in the new panels, and I couldn't get them out!

There were two speakers in each panel. They had some wierd bolts in them. I went to Best Buy, to get some new ones, and the Tech Guy says I have to go to the Dealer to get new ones because their's aren't replaceable speakers for my Monsoon System.

WTF??

Can Someone Help me out? I'm not a genius with stero stuff. Thank you

yeah i had the same problem. i was replacing the front speakers and wanted to take the ones in the sides of the trunk out. but even the guy at my audio place suggested just leaving them in there but unhooking them because they looked like a mess to get out

Yup. The speakers that come with the monsoon system are rated at different ohms because of the built in amp. Most of the time you either replace em again with factory, or just end up having to rewire the whole system. I did the whole rewire thing on my 93 because it had a Bose and it was fun project for the winter. Sounded a lot better when I was done. Good luck.

Re-Wire the Whole System?!?! Damn man... :(

That sounds expensive. The money is not really an issue now...But I don't have too much to blow.

So do I have to get...

New Head Unit
All New Speakers
All New Wiring
New Amp & Subs?

That sounds well over $1,000. But the Dealer Will probably hack off my D**K to replace the speakers. Oh man... :(

Sounds like a lot, but you know somebody that works at Best Buy, now is a good time to buddy up lol. The cost of the system will probably cost a lot, but if you can do the work yourself, that is where all the money will be saved. Just depends on the type of quality you want. Or, you can find a decent pair of speakers for sale on the boards and just replace those. I changed out everything in car for a little under 400 with me working on it. Learn a lot by taking everything apart. It is pretty self explanatory. +,- ground and power. Ebay usually has good deals. Good luck!

for the back back speakers, just disconnect them. and be done.

they're terrible for soundstage anyway.

Couldn't agree more. Just take your stock panels out and put in the new ones. Sell the old ones on Ebay or something. The stock speakers present the stock amp with a 2 ohm load. 99% of aftermarket speakers are 4 ohms. Ohms law tells us that if you double resistence, current is cut in half. And power = current X voltage. So double resistence = half power. Which equals an unhappy...you. lol :D To rip the entire monsoon system out and start from square one would not be a bad move. If cost is a concern, subwoofers can wait. Add them in when you get the cash. They are the most costly piece and probably the least important part of a good sounding system. Still important, but not nearly as much as the front stage. Next, install it all yourself. If not NEARLY as hard as you might think. Once you done, you would have kicked yourself for paying someone else to do it. We can walk you through any of it step by step if need be. And I can build you a system if you like.

Nice head unit=$230
Front components=as low as $100, but goes up from there.
Rear 6 1/2"s=$100
high power 4-channel amp=$250
Wiring & RCAs=$80

I can name specifics later if you like. That setup will easily be louder then the stock monsoon and sound much cleaner. However, it won't quite have the bass that the monsoon does. Not that the monsoon slams or anything...lol.... you know what I mean. You could add a 10" stealth box, 10" sub, and subamp for an extra $450 including all the extra wiring needed. You would still have your entire t-top area for storage and the install would be completely stealth. (depending on where you mount the amps) So you see, for $1500 I could build you a system that is three times that of the monsoon. Easily done. Read some of the other topics on this board. A couple of people have VERY recently installed their own gear and are very happy.

Another option is to replace the head unit and the front speakers and leave the Monsoon in the rear. It doesn't sound bad and you can power the fronts off the new head unit. Then at a later date add an amp for the front and do the rear speakers and a stealthbox for the low's.

Actually, I think if you get like a 6.5 subwoofer it should hook right up and are fairly low cost. Forgot about those things.

Those were about the prices I found. I couldn't find out about wiring, though. That, I will need help with. Now, my Monsoon System

Fill in the Blanks please! Sizes! :D

Two in Sail Panels. (Under Hatch)----6.5"x9" ?

The Speakers I found were Kenwood. Great Power & Prices. I would like to keep the Factory Head Unit, If possible.

Notice how I re-worded your desciptions. The sail panels are next to the rear seats. The front doors should be replaced with a component set. This includes two woofers, a pair of tweeters and two passive crossovers. You can get a nice set for around $140. Some are cheaper, but many are more expensive. The next thing we need to talk about is soundstage. You want your music up front and center. In your face. So you want to keep those high frequencies, which are very directional, IN FRONT of the listener. This means no tweeters, coaxils, triaxils or anything else with a tweeter on it in the sail panels or under the hatch. I recommend a midbass speaker for the sail panels. Something like the Kicker RMB6's or the Adire Audio Koda mids. Now on to the hatch speakers....toss em'. Yep, disconnect them or throw them away. Unless you see that size speaker doing 80Hz or below, get rid of it. ;) They are too far to the rear to do any good. Like I said, upfront and center. Now that you have a proper soundstage, we can talk subwoofers. Want one?

Hey, sorry for they delayed response. The Tech guy at Best Buy told me that I can't just replace the speakers, since I have the Monsoon System. What's up with that ****?

Next, can I replace all the speakers, includng Amp, yet keep the Factory Head Unit? I want to keep the Stock Appearence.

Thank you.

Well my set up is :
Jl components in front
Jl mid-bass in back seat
and in the far back i had custom fiberglass adaptor plates and mounts ($40 for each side)
and of corse Jl coaxials in the far back
for the far far back its great for sound stage because it fills the sound in nicely with that rounded hatch.

I bought my car from a guy here that owns many audio stores so I got wholesale

or you could just keep the rears pluged in but not atached to a big amp like the other speakers,
this is also fine so you still fill in that rear sound, try to keep speakers back there.

Ya I replaced everything and kept the stock head.
I think its sweet when people ask you if you have a system, and you turn it on and blast them away because they think its stock
