• Midbass Only in Rear

A lot of you guys are saying get a nice set of components in the front and just get midbass drivers for the back...

Where do I get these? Are the kicker 6.5s good? They are the only ones that I've heard of. Also, do I need to buy a crossover or something? How can I use the rear channels of my amp to driver the midbass right - do I come with a crossover?

Also, will this sound better than components or coaxials in the back? A guy at a speaker shop told me to get coazials for the back if I get components in the front.

Most people do like he said and get a coax in the back, just for more mids and highs. But lately around here, people are wanting a better sound stage (which I am really enjoying people getting into). So if you want concert type sound, with the music in front of you, get a comp set up front, and mids-drivers in the back. They aren't too common, b/c the demand isn't there usually. But go to a private shop, not best buy or circuit, and ask them for a mid bass driver. They should have some. You will need a crossover, lots of amps have them built in. I have also seen and heard this done without crossovers, running full range...It didn't sound too bad, but the guy was using 8" Rockford MID-BASS drivers, NOT a regular 8" sub. If you get the mid driver, it can sound alright with it running full range...My preference is to cross it over just for a little extra staging help. I don't want ANY high range sound coming from behind me!

Sure he would, so he can make a sale. To keep the soundstage up front, don't put anything big back there, not even coaxials.

I left my stock 4 inch speakers, and disconnected my rear stock tweeters. I want all the highs to come from up front. It has a small amp of its own, but the gain is a little down. It's only for rear fill... I hate having overpowering music from the rear, and bass is typically non directional.

Aren't crossovers expensive just to do the back? Are there any midbass speakers with the crossover built in?

My amp is a 5 channel, and will bump the extreme lows (either set to 70hz or 110hz) to the sub, but anything above that goes to the rear channel. A midbass speaker that filtered out the highs would be nice.

Just buy a couple of caps, or attempt to build your own passive crossover.

Building a crossover is highly not recommended. Crossovers with more than 6db slope need to be professionaly built or else you're going to end up with a mess. To build a crossover for a midbass driver you'll need a coil to block the highs and a non-polarized cap to block the lows. And then you have to figure out the fequencies you need to block. Or you can save yourself the time and effort and go buy matching components for your front and rear and just not hook up the tweet in the rear.

"Sure he would, so he can make a sale"?....Are you talking about me? I no longer work in this industry. I work at Advance Auto Parts. The reason I said I am enjoying people getting into the sound quality stuff, is b/c it sets them aside from the ricers, and is a BIG step for alot of people. Most are stuck on big bass, and always will be. Which is fine, but I really like seeing people who appreciate MUSIC, not just BASS.

I am a fan of having a nice enough mid bass driver up front that you dont need any speakers in the back. This along with a nice 10" sub in the trunk is a good setup for sound staging and over all SQ. I was enjoying it quite well until i fried my amp. Sigh, oh well...gotta move on.

I think massivefirebird was referring to the guy at the stereo shop trying to sell me the rear coaxials.

I suscribe to the theory that all your sound should be up front. ALL of your sound! My opinion is that you should just save your money on the mid-bass, and then spend the extra on better components.

No offense, but I've gotten to know a few salesmen... no offense to you all, but half the time this guy was saying all kind of stuff to get me to buy Alumapro Alchemy subs... don't get me wrong, it sounded great... of course, it was three 12's with a Zapco 1000 watt amp.

But, I came with questions about Infinity Perfect subs, which is a line of subs that they also carry. All I wanted was to sample the Perfect, and to hear his opinion of it... he kept saying, and I quote, Infinity isn't all that. They only make house speakers. You want an Alchemy 12. And he wanted me to pay 50 bucks extra???

I ask for this and I got that, so I left the store. When a Massive dealer let me put it in my trunk and hook it up to my amp, I liked it instantly! It sounded great, and he LISTENED to what I was saying...

There is a dealer here local that i really like. They let me hear the IDQ in my car, before i decided to buy it. Never even ask for a reciept if i come up there with a question or want them to check something out (thought i blew the sub a few weeks ago, false alarm though ). Not all dealers/salesmen are bad.

I go to this Korean dude named Mr. Kim. He's cool as hell, he lets me try out all his stuff in my car before I decide to buy!

The key is to find a good salesman and keep going to him, avoid the crappy ones!
