  • battery junction, amp installation

A while ago, I paid to get an amp installed in my car from Tweeter. Recently, I'm wiring up another amp and I'm re-doing all the wiring.

I noticed that when I had the amp installed at Tweeter, they ran power wire from the battery junction box, to an inline fuse like 6" away from the junc., and that went all the way back to the amp.

I wanted to put the new inline fuse in the same position, but I didn't want to go through the battery junction again, I wanted to go straight from the battery to the fuse. I was worried that the amps would draw so much power from the junction box that I would get effects such as lights dimming when the speakers were turned up.

The problem is, I read everywhere that the fuse needs to be within like 18" from the battery? If I do it my way, it's like 30" from the battery.

    What should I do?

Should I just run a bigger wire to the junction box, and from there, go to the inline fuse, then to the amp? Or should I just move the inline fuse holder closer to the battery, and just bypass the junction box and go straight to the amp from there.

The bat junc. is more then 18" from the battery? I'm not exactly sure what a battery junction is, why isn't there a fuse between the battery and the junction?

    Thanks!

That junction is limited by the size of the power wire feeding it from the battery.

In the case of my gf's car, she's only pushing around 150W, so a 10 gauge wire from the junction box is no big deal [no problems].

If you're running 8ga wire or bigger and some serious power, I would tap the battery directly. In my setup [8ga, 200W amp], my fuse sits on the inner fenderwell. No problems.

i was planning to run 4g to the junction box, and from that run 4g to an inline fuse, then go all the way back to the amp.

I was planning to have the fuse like 6" away from the battery junction box.

I wanted to know if i need to fuse the wire between the battery and the junction box.

It was previously installed, they have 8g going to the bat junc, which is like 2 1/2 feet away from the battery, with no fuse between the bat and the junction box, and then 8g into a fuse, then 8g back to the amp.

Run the 4ga directly off the battery, and have the fuse about a foot away from it.

If you are drawing too much power off the junction [fed by a smaller gauge wire than you have hooked to it] you will run into limitations/problems sooner than if you take the power directly from the source-- the battery.

As I said before, I've used the connection at the "junction" before to run a fused power wire like your car has now, but I would only do it for lower-powered stuff.

There are others here who know more than me who will chime in soon, I'm sure.

Definatley.. do NOT go off the junction..
I dont know why tweeter would do that, it's not a good idea.
Like said before that power is limited and putting a strain from a bigger amplifier on that will cause power issues in the car.

When i was new to it, i did that on a monte carlo and it caused problems a few weeks later and bby was responsible.

If it were a 10ga. power cable it would probably be ok but theres no way a 4ga.

As long as u have an inline fuse within 15inches from the battery u will be ok.
I usually recomment a fuse in the front and back but it really doesnt matter.
If the junction is only 2.5 feet from the battery just run it off the battery, itll save u a headache or two.
