  • Is my Rockford 120a2 Strong enough to run my components?

    Hey guys, i have a rockford 120a2 (the older style) and i just but a set of 6.5 Infinity components.....My current setup:

    Rockford 800a2
    Custom JL Box, w/ 3 JL W6 subs

    ...i have a '97 firebird, i took out all the rear speakers and I just want to run the components in the front with the 120 amp?? Considering i'm running so much power with the subs, when i crank it will my components have enough juice? Or will i need a bigger amp?

    Im pretty sure that amp would do the job just fine, cuz almost always, those rockford amps are way underrated.

      hey, thanks for the reply....i know they are always underrated, but for some reason when i tested the component speakers out with the amp i had the volume on my deck about half way, and they didn't sound as loud as the should have. with the 120a2 I think i have 30watts x 2 going to the component speakers, i'm rpetty sure that is what my friend told me, i just don't know if that is good enough with my existing system...

        most rockford amps put out the shown power at 2 ohms instead of 4. which is prolly why the speakers dont sound as loud, because they are 4 and are only getting half the power they could be getting from that amp.

          Well, im kinda confused as to why the amp is just giving 30x2 to the components if thats the only thing hooked up to it. If you turn the gain all they way up on the amp to be giving the components the most power it can, it should get a lot louder.

            30 x 2 @ 4 ohms
            60 x 2 @ 2 ohms
            120x 1 @ 4 ohms (bridged)

              Gain is NOT a volume control. :rolleyes: Volume is controled by the head unit, NOT the amp. Gain is there to match your head units output to the amps output. Most Fosgates now I think can accept up to 5volts. Lets just say the head unit puts out 4 volts. With the gain all the way up, the amp is going to be making it's max safe power at barely 1/4 volume on the head unit. Turn that head unit up to about 70% volume and the signal is going to be SEVERLY clipped. Clipping kills your speakers faster than anything else except a knife.

              Now, if your head unit only puts out a 2volt signal, then it's safe to turn the gain up to somewhere near 80% probably assuming you don't turn the head unit to max volume ever. Which most people don't by the way. Unless you're absolutely sure the head unit doesn't clip the pre-outs at max volume it's better not to turn the volume up more than 75% and to set the amps to reach max output at that volume.

                Well sorry if it sounded like I meant gain was volume control, I was just saying that if his amp's power was turned down, then he should turn the gain up higher, so they would be getting more power, so when he did turn the volume up from the HU, they would be louder.
