There's more brands out today that will play MP3 than just Sony and Aiwa. I guess it's all in your budget on what you want to spend. Kenwood offers a very nice head unit that plays MP3 and also has cool displays such as CD titling, vibrant colors and easy to use and read controls. Be prepared to spend around $300 to $400 for a good quality headunit. As far as your question goes, in my opinion the Sony sound quality is limilted and the Aiwa is a WalMart product so that speaks for itself... As far as your speakers, all 4 will take a "true" 6 1/2, not 6". AudioBahn has some great speakers with good bass for around $100 to $150 price range. You can get a simple stock replacement for around $60 to $70 per pair. Keep in mind, that if you want bass, I suggest a 10" sub in your cargo area but then if you do that you'll have to get an amplifier. I'm running a Kicker 5 channel amp that runs my intire audio system. I have a Kenwood KFC9017 HU with a Kenwood 4042 EQ, Kicker 6" componets in my front doors and a single Kicker L5 12" Solo Baric dropped in a custom ported box that fits flush in my cargo space. Happy Birthday and happy car audio shopping... :D

Out of Sony and Aiwa, I would choose Sony just because I never hear anyone talk about the Aiwa's. However, Sony isn't making a whole lot of bang in the car audio market though. Might want to look into some brands such as Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion, Eclipse. I'm sure they have MP3 players too.
When it comes to the speakers, you are NOT going to get good bass out of them with head unit power and running them as low as they will play. Door speakers are not meant for bass. They should be crossed over at 80Hz to keep them safe from damage. If you want something that sounds good you are going to need this:
New head unit; one set of quality component speakers for the doors, at least 1 10inch sub in the back for bass, and an amp or two to power everything. With one sub and one set of front components you really would only need one 4 channel amp if you get a good one.
I don't want to get into details, just wanted to let you know that with a new head unit and 4 speakers only you are not going to get the kind of performance you are hoping for.
Just a side note: Aiwa and Sony are the same company/entity.
Kinda like HarmonKardon, Polk and Infinity.
The Aiwa electronics are identical to sony electronics in most ways, they often neuter the software so they don't have as many features, and therefore you buy the more expensive sony stuff.
I have an Aiwa receiver at home for my rec room 5.1 setup and I'm very happy with it.
