• 3 12" subs in an F-Body!!!

I'm thinking about putting 3 12" subs in my Firebird. I have 2 Fusion Audio Powerplant Fpw 1200 subs and 1 JL Audio 12W3 D4. Would my Rockford Fosgate Punch 500 A2 amp work for all these subs at once? Would it be possible for me to put 3 12's in my Firebird or would air space mess me up? What kind of amp should I get to power all three of these bad boys if my Rockford won't power them? And can I use the JL Audio sub with the Fusion Powerplant subs? If anyone could help that would be great.

i need to know if those subs are dvc and what ohmage they have to tell you how to wire it. I would think you would need a more powerful amp though (the jbl 1200w amp is a good choice and so is the elemental design nine.1).

Afraid it's not that easy. Different subs act and sound differently.

The Fusion Powerplant subs are 4 ohm DVC and the JL Audio is Dual 4 ohm. The Fusion Powerplant subs are 450 watts rms and peak-900 watts and the JL Audio is 250 watts rms and I don't know about the peak on them. Hope this helps. Thanks

hmm, with that much of a difference in the subs in watage i would probably ditch the JL and get another fusion.

Has anyone ever used the Fuison Powerplant Fpw 1200 sub before and how good is it? Which is a better sub JL Audio 12W3 D4 or Fusion Powerplant Fpw 1200? Thanks

The difference in wattage is the least of the worries. Not all subwoofers are created equally!

Don't have a WHOLE LOT of experience with Fusion. I had a buddy who is using one of their component sets in his Tahoe. He was powering them with 40WRMS for a while... and to tell you the truth, I wasn't impressed at all. Then the same guy ended up buying my old amps. Now his juicin em' with 100WRMS. (Tripled power on the subs too ;) ) Much better. I think he probably had the gain cranked on his old amp and had to crank the volume up also for the components to keep up with his subs. Causing quite a bit of distortion. Now that he's got some power behind them, no need to blast the volume for them to be loud. Anyway, Fusion is a decent company in my book.

I got to thinking and after talking to some buddies I thought of how i could make this work. So here we go. I could take the Rockford Fosgate Punch 500 A2 amp and power just the JL Audio 12W3 D4 sub. I could then buy another amp, like a 1200 watt amp, to power the two Fusion Powerplant subs. So what do you guys think of that plan? Thanks

I wouldn't mix subs like that, I'd use all 3 of the same kind.

Different subs sound differently. One may cleanly extend down to 20Hz, while another may have a hard time doing 30Hz. One may over-emphasize a 45Hz tone, while another subwoofer may do just the opposite. (All boxes being equal of course) May end up with some cancelation on certain frequencies as well..... and those are the least of the problems. You plan on putting them in the same box!?!???? Now you're really looking to do some damage.

One brand of speaker is going to move more air then the other. Be it from having slightly more power (due to two different amps) or just one having a higher efficiency then the other. Have a read on how sealed boxes work from Jl Audio. Basically, if one subwoofer is moving more then the others, pressure will either increase or decrease (depending on direction of motion) and cause the opposite to happen for the other subwoofers.

Stop and think about it for a second. If one sub is moving outward more then the others, pressure will decrease and pull the other subs inward. (When they are trying to be forced outward by their own amp) My guess as to what the end result would be...... one of two things. First, the sub(s) that are moving less would end up with fried voice coils because they will not be able to dissipate heat from the power you're giving them. Second would be that one of the subs will exceed their mechanical limits due to be forced too far in one direction. Obviously, both theories would depend on how much of a difference there is between the two. Just my guess though.

Well I have thought about it more and have come up with the plan to sell the JL Audio (as you might see below) and sell the amp and just have 2 subs going at it and buy a 1300-1600 watt amp to power the other 2 subs. It was a good idea at first but not at the end. Thanks to all.
