You'll get a hundred different opinions on that one. I'm kinda partial to Alpine myself.

      here's my setup:

I used Rockford Fosgate Fanatic Q 6 1/2" components in the doors and 6 1/2" Alpine Type S's in the backseat area for a little rear fill, all run from a RF 301X amp. Then I just removed the hatch speakers and threw in a Milhouse box with a pair of 10" Alpine Type R subs, run from a RF 500S amp.

I have 6.5" Infinity components up front and 2-ways in the back seat. You could prob make 6x9s fit in the hatch but I wouldnt recommend it.

If you want to get the best sound out of your speakers then an amp would definitely help, but its not necessary.

Honestly, I am partial to Pioneer when it comes to 6 1/2" speakers. They're the only ones I have ever used and I honestly think they kick ***. I have a pair of those in the backseat with my sub/amp setup -- and it sounds ****in GOOD. All I have to replace now are the door speakers and its going to kick ***.

I got infinity 6.5 all around, running off alpine headunit. Super clear, gonna put in a small two channel to power the front set as soon as it warms up a little.

The dollar figure depends on where you get the stuff. I paid about $220 for the fanatic q components, about $60 for the Alpine 2-ways, about $420 for the subs and box, about $300 for the amps, $125 for my amp rack and an amp wiring kit, and $100 for my capacitor. So it was over $1200 total. I got about $150 to $200 of it back when I sold the factory stuff on Ebay though.

Again, dollar figure? None of the above mentioned brands would fall into the top ten for "the best out there". IMO of course.
