I installed an inespensive system my dad bought for his car (95 cutlass supreme) which uses a kenwood kdc-205 cd-player, Pioneer ts-a6990r 6x9's for the rear deck, kenwood kfc-1389ie 5-1/4's for the doors and a Sony 4-channel Amp 50watts rms x 4 (cant remember the model number.) Well after I got it all hooked up, it well, pretty much sounds worse than the stock system lol. In terms of bass/mids, there's none at all, it sounds like a tin can. I'm not looking for a lot but I know 6x9's can put out a little bass. I've amped 6x9's before just using cheap (40watt rms x 2) amps and it made a hell of a difference than that over a generic stock speakers. I put the bass all the way up on the headunit and it did very little; the "loudness" button does nothting at all.

We returned the headunit today and upgraded to a Kenwood kdc-mpv5025 cd-player, which has front & rear RCA outputs. I'm hoping that's what the problem is. The specs on the kdc-205 were pretty bad (ie. s/n ratio: 93dB) where as the kdc-mpv5025 has 105dB. Again, I know the speakers and amp aren't the best but I know they should make better sound than the factory. If the new cd-player doesn't make a difference I'm not sure what to do next? Maybe use a different amp?

Ya man sony amps aren't the best. I would try to get another if you could. Also I never have liked kenwood h/u's always been a pioneer man. My fiancee wanted a kenwood a while back beccause it changed a whole bunch of colors, she bought it and has regreted it ever since. I told her not to sell the pioneer but she did and like I said now she is sorry.

Have you made sure all the crossovers are setup right and everything like that?

Ive used 1 pioneer and 2 kenwood excelon. When you you buy the bottom line or lower line thats what you get.
The Pioneer had no clarity, but with the same speakers the Kenwood excelon rocked. Now change the speakers and mute the internal amp and add a nice aftermarket one and its friggen bad. I dont need an equalizer because of the amount of play I have.
I love clear, loud music, and when I do a system I dont really like to skimp, but I dont need top of the line either. I would probably switch out the amp and speakers before the head unit.

I'm going to put the new headunit in tomorrow and see if that makes a difference.

I double checked the x-overs on the Sony amp and made sure they were set right. I even turned them off so everything runs full range but that didn't help. Another thing I tried was running all 4 speakers off of just two channels (to try and squeeze out a little more wattage since that put it at 2-ohms stereo) but it didn't do a whole lot.

So i'm not sure what's up, its almost as if the bass/trebble/loudness adjustments don't work on the one set of rca's on the cheaper kdc-205. It could just be the sony amp too so who knows.

The new headunit made things sound better but he's not happy. He don't know much about car audio and was expecting amazing sound from it I guess. I tried explaining that the equipment he bought just isn't all that great to begin with. All i know is my work is done, i'm tired of messing with it.
