  • Alternator Whine Changes with Weather

The other day I adjusted the gains on my amp because I had them set really low and my components weren't getting any punch. Now the speakers sound great, but I'm getting annoying alternator whine. The whine got even louder when I turned the air conditioner on. I looked over my connections and everything looked solid.
Then I went to Radio Shack and got a ground loop isolator and hooked it the rcas between the head unit and the amp. That got rid of almost all of the alternator whine. I could still hear it when I put my ear to the tweeter, but when my head is 4 feet from the tweeter (which is where it is normally) I can't hear the whine at all.

I thought the problem was fixed with the ground loop isolator, but then I got into my car when it was raining and there was the whine as loud as ever. What could cause this? What makes alternator whine and what makes it worse when it is damp out or raining?

Check your ground wire, as well as all of you other connections. If that doesn't work, try routing wires that carry signal away from power sources.

can a ground wire ground the connection so that the components work, but not be a good enough ground so that noise is introduced into the system?

can one ground spot be better than another or do grounds just work or not work?
