I installed my system this weekend, ran the power wire up the passenger side and the 3 sets of rca's along the drivers side. I do however have speaker wire running alongside the power wire, and even crossing it at one point. Do you think this could be the problem. I didn't sand down the paint where I placed my ground, I just put it in between 2 other grounds which were already in the trunk area. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Sanding paint off is a must. You might even think about selecting a different location to ground, just to see what happens. Also, did you connect the ground wire from your head unit to the factory ground wire? If so, run it straight to the chassis... worked for me!

Does the whining sound increase with the rpms. If so you power and speaker wire are too close. If you have multiple amps make sure that you use a common ground.

Sounds to me like a bad ground. Sand that paint off where you grounded it and make sure there's lots and lots of bare metal contacting.

        Good luck!

yep, I had the same initial problem, if the sound increases/decreases with rpm's, it's the distance of your wiring

Not necessarily. I took extra care to keep mine as far apart as possible. Power wire under passenger floor. RCAs under driver floor and speaker wire run under the top plastic piece on the roof. I have checked, moved and re-checked my grounds. It's the alternator causing the problem. Maybe this link will help some....

I shortened the ground wire to about 8 inches and sanded down the hole on the trunk latch and bolted the ground wire there, but I still hear the whinning. It seems to momentarily go away when i increase rpms significantly. Doesn't get any louder or quieter though with an increase/decrease in rpms. I listened to all four speakers and they are all making the same sound.

Also last night, I can hear the alternator whinning really loudly when I revved the car up. The sound from the speakers isn't increasing but I hear a high pitched squeal getting louder and louder from the engine.

go to best buy and they sell these isolator boxes that you pluf your rcas into. i had that whine. whenever the car is off, no whine. as soon as i crank it up. all this noise came out. so i bought a couple of em and its soooo quiet i like it.

Watch out for your power feed. Make sure your RCAs are quality.

The ignition is a probable suspect. All the massive amounts of energy creating a huge spark also creates massive amounts of interference. The range of human hearing is ~30Hz to 20kHz, so let's think about the frequencies of your ignition and what type of sounds you will hear:

at 1000 RPM idle, with your 6 cylinders, you will have a ~6000Hz ignition frequency (assuming a 1 fire/cycle spark rate). When you rev it up to a little over 3400 RPM you will have about a 20kHz frequency of interference. You're not going to hear that high pitch sound.

That's probably why the sound goes away when you rev it.

If your speaker wire MUST cross the power wire, make sure it intersects at a 90* angle.

As already said, check your grounds. Make sure all the components are grounded at the same point.

                          Check the alternator

Well I finally got around to some investigating yesterday, and started unplugging rca's from my car. I have 3 set's of Rca's, fronts, rears and subs. When I unplugged the sub rca's the whine sound from the speakers disappeared. The wires aren't the greatest of quality, they are just purple shielded rca's, but I didn't think that you needed high quality rca's for the sub channel.

                            Any suggestions to my problem?

                              Oops!

I meant the sub RCA's are the purple shielded ones, the other RCA's are Lightening Audio twisted pair.
