so much to explain... it all depends on what kind of head unit you have, and what kind of speakers you want... if you're going to power the speakers of the head unit (no external amp) it's probably in your best interest not to get really "nice" speakers. definitely get 2 ways, don't go over 30 or 40 watts rms. i'm assuming your head unit is pushing 40x4 max (although they can range from 20x4 to 60x4). if you have the 10 speaker set up, it might be best to disconnect the rear deck speakers unless you plan on amping them, otherwise you won't be able to hear any difference at all. it might actually be louder without those extra speakers hooked up.
so, basically get an amp if you want loud clear sound, but if you do it right you can get a nice sounding system without putting in the extra money.

I have a kenwood head unit 4x-40 i was looking at pioneer's or kenwood speakers 2 way's. 6 1/2 However i pulled the speaker panels from a trans am that had the 10 stereo package. I pulled the back hatch panels will i be able to make 6x9's work or will they hti the hatch struts. I know those need ampedMy new ride 2000 camaro, No mods yet still waiting for warranty to run out then all out heads, cam, and supercharger

well 6x9's are nice but really not the most cost efficient. if you're looking for the bass they give, it'd be best just to get some subs. the 6 1/2s should provide plenty of mids and highs... i had a pair of kappa 6x9s before and they were awesome, but because of their price and the watts necessary to push them, i decided to sell them and put some money towards a new pair of subs.
if all you want is good clean sounding music, without unneeded spl, and you've got some money to throw around, get 6x9s... but who doesn't want unneeded spl?
