  • deep ported vs standard sealed

i was on subthump.com looking at boxess and noticed that you could get a ported or sealed box. what is the difference between the two? does the size of the sub i get make a difference as to which kind of box? i was planning to get either a 10 or 12 in jl10w3 sub? can i hook two or three subs up together on one amp?

Ported boxes are quite a bit louder than the same size sealed box. Most times I really recommend the sealed box though, They tend to be way loud enough for the average bass head. It also depends on the specs of the subs.

The deep box you see posted on the site actually goes all the way to the bottom of the well. It can be sealed or ported. The ported version was dubbed the v6maro box awhile back. Pics of that box are posted.

The deep boxes as you can imagine have more air space than the shallower 'standard' size box (which sits above where the t-top holders are).

But whenever you're going ported with a pair of 12s, you need the extra air space of the deep box. With one 12 ported or two 10s ported, you might be able to get away with the standard size box. Just depends on the sub specs.

And yes, you can hook up more than one sub to an amp. But you have to watch the final impedence you create when wiring the subs together. ;)

Right now, I'm running one of Subthumps deep ported with two 12" Audiobahn's, and it makes them pound hard. If you run two twelves, I'd definitely recommend that type of box.

I couldn't BELIEVE the diference in sound once I got that box installed. Thanks a lot for the help man. As soon as I get my digital camera working, I'll send you some pics of the install.

Right on. That reincforces what I've said all along--spending a little money on a well made box is definately worth it.
