    I bought some simple Sony Explode 6 1/2 4-way speakers at Wal-Mart for $49.99 man and they sound excellent. I didn't want anything nice, just something new and a little better. For that price I couldn't resist.

      If you are not looking for anything extreme, go to a local stereo shop and listen to some and see what you like. Stay away from sony IMO.

                  How much money you wanna spend?
                  What do you like to listen to?
                  What do you have for a headunit?
                  Are you amping the stock speakers?
                  Do you have a sub and amp in the car?

                  Then you can get some sort of informed answer.

                  I have Polk db series 6 3/4' all around off an aftermarket JVC kdar-600 head unit. They cost me $89 for each pair, and sound good with many different styles of music. I have a 12' sub also. I think one of the biggest obstacles to anything in the stock location sounding GREAT is the the low placement of the front door speakers at a lousy angle. Another brand I think are similar in quality to these are the Infinity Reference. A couple of brands that I like better than these are Soundstream and Memphis. A price range would help us a lot here...

                      okay, until the experts chime in here...
                      The wires going to your trunk are probably RCA cables that sent signal to an amp that the previous owner had back there. Or, it may also be a power wire for an aftermarket amp that originated from the battery under the hood. If either or both of those are there, adding a sub and amp [when the time comes] will be easy.

                      You could get a good replacement head unit [the radio] for $150-200, good speakers for $80-100 per pair, and about $30 for a wiring harness, mounting kit, etc.

                      If you wanted to add a sub, box, and amp [nothing outrageous, just a starter set], you'd be looking at another $250. Add it all up and you get the whole shooting match for less than $600. This is assuming you do all the work yourself, which isn't too difficult on these cars.

                      Read the "mods encyclopedia" links on the stereo system in the meantime until one of the moderators stops in to give an answer.

                          IMO vvv
                          Amps= Overrated
                          Subs= Cheap
                          Headunits= alright

                          Most people say Sony is crap when it comes to car audio.

                            sony should stay away from car audio, the older stuff before the xplod line is pretty good i have a 1995 model amp "25X2"

                            its actually more like 75x2

                              First, read this.

                              With a $5-600 budget, you could probably put components up front, coaxils in the rear, replace the headunit AND throw in a 4-channel amp with about 50WRMSx4@4ohms.
                              Such as these:
                              Audiobahn
                              Hifonics
                              You'll get rated power out of either of those.

                              EDIT: Maybe CDT components from www.thezeb.com or I've had great luck with Infinity's Reference line.
