Okay here's the situation: We hooked up my two 10" subs and my 50 watt amp. We finally turned on the system and the subs are not working. The amp is on. The subs DO work cuz we put them in my friends car and they worked off of his amp. We are pretty sure it is not the RCA cables that run from the amp to the head unit cuz we used the ones we ran in my car and another persons cables, so the chances of both sets being bad are kinda slim. So do you think it's my head unit pre amp outputs? The last time I used them was back in march, they haven't been used since then. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! I am going to use a third set of RCA cables to be sure on that point. If it is my preouts, is there a way to fix them, or do I need a new head unit? Thanks again!

What I recommend doing is using a portable CD player, and getting a jack to convert it to the 1/8" stereo headphone jack to an RCA output and plug that into the rca input of the amp and see if you can power the subs off of that. You should be able to figure out if it is or isn't the HU by doing that.
Good luck!

Your head unit might have a setting on it that allows you to turn your subs on and off. My Pioneer does. And everytime I disconnect the battery, it resets and I have to switch that setting everytime. This is usually only on a head unit that has one of those "non-fading" RCA outs.

I have a Pioneer unit too but I turned the subs on and nothing still was coming out. Also, me and my buddy took RCA cables and ran them from his amp's outputs to my amp's inputs to see if it was my amp's RCA inputs that were screwed up and it made my subs go, so the only thing left is the preouts on the head unit itself. I don't know how or why they would go out, the unit is only a couple years old and only had subs hooked up to them for about 7 months. Is it possible to test the preouts on my unit or some way to fix them? Does anybody else think it could be something else?
