  • tweeter Q?

ok guys my setup for my mids/high as of now is:
    audiobahn 4004t
    ED 6000's components
    ED Eu700's

my 6000's will cutoff one speaker then the other if i have the volume to loud, no distortion but cutoff, so i am going to upgrade my amp to a 6004 which instead of 50 watts rms to the components i would get 75 watts rms! will this be a noticeable diff?

also i was going to get a set of infinity tweeters to put up in the front somewhere and hook them up to my cd player! would this be a good idea? thanks chet

First things first. Why are your components cutting out? Amp over heating?

what do u mean grounding out, i would think the amp couldnt push them no more and shuts off one channel then eventually the other??? BUT i also bridged the 4 channel amp on JUST them 2 speakers and same thing happened????????

sounds like you have a short in the amp or the wiring.

If the amp isn't turning off its not shorting.. You guys are over looking the simplest things here. Do they cut out at low volume or just high volume? Does it take awhile. A common thing in better component crossovers is a poly protection switch, so if you play them too hard and they get too warm, it opens and poof no power to your speakers to save them. Sometimes they only put it on the tweeters. If the speaker itself is grounding out it will make cracks and really dirty sounds as it sparks, and that will also trigger the amps protection and shut it off, in which case both speakers will cut at the same time.

As far as the extra set of tweeters, be careful what tweeters you use, and make dead sure you use the crossovers, most tweeters can't take any sort of clip, so watch your volume also. In my opinion in high volume the Infinity Reference tweeters get shrill and become painful to my ear anyways, I much prefer the Kappas and Perfects. Anyways yes you would notice a difference in going to 75 watts from 50, it is half again the power, but if your speaker is cutting out from heating up too much, it probably wouldn't help at all. The extra set of tweeters, I always run my 2-way components and an extra set personally, that way I don't have to beat on my tweets and blow them.
