well my left control finally went out. i did search and read a couple posts about this topic (here and on ls1). some things that i would like to point out:
they are NOT LED's. they appear to be a minature (T-1 or T-3/4) bi-pin 12V bulb with a colored cap. these bulbs typically have a rated lifetime of 10,000 hours. i just dipped the replacements i bought online in some red touchup paint.
and yes, they have to be incandescents. dimming LED's (by varying the voltage) doesnt work particularly well. i tried replacing with a commonly available 12V LED. not bright enough (a high brightness surface mount LED might work but you will still have the dimming problem).
you need a torx T30 to remove the airbag.
