Camarowidbass:
I'm wanting a good alt that can power my "system" or my "bump".
Any recommendations on an alt better than a 105amp?

is 160amp alternator overkill?
it puts out 70-80amps at idle

our cars come with a stock 105 amp alt, i run a 180 amp alt that i got from

www.4alterstart.com

i would highly reccomend them, i paid $200 shipped for mine with lifetime warantee.

Ive had it for 3 years without any problems, and i put a very heavy load on it.

i have a 3000 watt RMS system, 2 optima yellow tops, and a few other electrical goodies that draw a lot of power such as a 700 watt power inverter for the smoke machine & the PS2.

The picture of my system in my profile is the old, old system, like 2 years ago. Since then ive went through 2 completely diffrent systems.

You should get some updated pictures .

And I won't need a new alt for 1200W, will I?

Let me put it like this, the stock alt puts out a maximum of 105 amps. The viper at full volume will pull about 120 amps. Your car still needs about 40 or so amps to run accessories.

So thats like that 160 amps or so? But then again its not like your going to go around with your radio on max all the time either.

Also your battery has a lot to do with your electrical. In my beater i have a 300 watt amp pushing some subs, with the walmart battery under the hood the needle on the voltage meter goes to the red.

The other day for the hell of it i dropped in my optima yellow top, i went around bumpin the system and the needle barely would move.

what the hell? a fog machine? lol cool

so with the wal-mart battery your alternator needle is all the way left(dead), red.
but with the optima, it just barely moves from the left position, red?

thanks for the link

help..I've been wondering about a possible alt upgrade too,but am really reluctant too go thru the hassle. I have an all stock monsoon system still in my 02 bird...but made in line taps to the rear hatch tweeters ,feeding a (walmart)VR 200 watt amp along side 340 watt amp. The Vr is powering two 6x9..and the 340 is powering two 12' subs. A 1'frd compliments the subs. I was given a Jensen JPA460 (600 watt). My intent is to jerk the VR out and somehow intergrate the jpa460..but I am worried about over burdening the electrical system. can I get away with this and keep the original alt without probs.

I thought about disabling DRL lights to knock about 10 amps use off of the electrical ????

Also...when calculating possible power consumption used up by amplifiers...should that include the monsoon amp..separate from the 40 amps(vital cont. vehicle electrical fuctions) ???./
