I need to buya new CD player for my Firebird, but I dont really know too much about models and like years and stuff. Preferably under $100, just to play some CDs because m Alpine is too slow at reading for my taste. I would also like a rotary volume control....any ideas or good brands for guidance??
I saw a JVC KDg120 for 69.99
I put a Pioneer in mine about 3-4 years ago and its still going strong, my best CD player yet.. if you order from Crutchfield.com they will tell you which models will fit your car, but any non-factory CD player you put in your firebird will need some modifications (aka installation kit) to fit, but thats no biggie but i've never heard a bad remark on Pioneer, they last forever and are well worth your money.. if you dont go pioneer i'd probably go kenwood or panasonic or sony.. hope this helps some.. :D
What do you mean to slow at reading? My alpines had some problems but that is a new one on me. For 100 bucks i wouldnt expect much. I'll go ahead and throw out two great head unit companies to look at though, Eclipse and Clarion. Those are the only two i will buy anymore. An older Alpine is a good choice as well. My old alpine 7863 and 7969 were good units (the 7969 will require you to buy an amp though as it has no internal power) but anything newer than those i had problems with.

I've had good luck with the cheap JVC's. With most of the name brands at that price it's probably a crapshoot. Read the customer reviews at Crutchfield-- they are usually informative.

DONT BUY AN XPLOD!!! I've installed to many of them for friends and all they have is trouble. Every once in a while you will get lucky with them but typically its gonna be a pita.

Ya, i would stay away from sony. I've never heard anything but bad stuff about them. i personally like pioneer and have never had any problems with them. I know you want something under 100$, but id say spend the extra 20$ and get a pioneer deh-2800mp. good reliability, puts out 22watt rms, 50x4 mosfet amp, plays mp3s and wma files!, great equalizer, and set of preamp outputs. check it out. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-q5qdvRJ...0&I=130DEH2800

Personally I have always been a fan of Denon, Mkintosh, Alpine, Ecplise, and Clarion. I have owned /used/or installed 100s of every deck company out there. JVC's do not seem to be too bad for the cost, the power isn't that great, and the sound quality if you are NOT running an amplifier isn't too horrible. Pioneer isn't bad either, their quality has dropped off over the years, but they don't make a bad unit, Kenwood is another in the same game, sony- sony is a very interesting line, generally a decent amount of power, but tons of distortion, and they are trouble some, now if you spend some money and get one from what they at least used to call their mobile ES line thats a hot deck. Alpine lately has fallen alot! When they changed over, and went to sell their stuff at bestbuy I kinda lost all respect for them, they used to make some of the best even through the 70's, and now they sold out and mass market, they are off the chart. Still not a bad unit but not something I would buy.
Personally if you want to spend a little money I would say pick up a Clarion, great deck, good power, really clean, you don't get alot of cool and fun features and they don't look all cool with graphics and stuff, but I personally never liked that anyways. Honestly I think you would be 100x happier if you saved up another 50$ or so and went to around 130-150$ marks, you can get alot for that first 50$ extra.
