• Black Box Under Steering Column????

On my 94' Camaro under the steering column there seems to be a piece of plastic trim I assume it is to keep the wires under the dash tucked neatly away (new to fourth gens) Anyway Under that there is a black box about 5-6" long with red and white wires coming out of it. Is this for an alarm?? BTW it is like cramed up into the dash really sloppy. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

My guess would be yes. That is a VERY popular place for installers to shove the "brain" of an alarm. When I first bought my car, about 5 years ago, I had an aftermarket alarm installed. Picked it up and it worked so I didn't really ask many questions. However, when I started installing my stereo... BAM!.... there it is. HUGE mess of wires under the steering column. HUGE! I can't believe they let that mess leave their shop. Questions for ya, are the wires on plugs? That plug into the box? The box has no markings on it? Maybe follow a couple of the wires and see where they go?

yeah, they are wires and plugs going into the box. The car had an aftermarket alarm on it when I bought it, But since I don't believe in alarm's I disconnected it by cutting the wires going from the mercury box (I think that is what you call it) to the siren and also the wires going into the mercury box. I threw the siren in the garbage can :D

Just wanted to note to make sure the wires you cut don't touch each other or ground out on anything metal, like the steering column for example. Though the alarm is disabled, some of the wiring you cut could still be "live."
