• amp/sub help

Hi all check the faq section, still confused, i'll make it short for you all. Iam getting a 12" alpine type R tonight, it is rated at 4 ohms. Iam planning on getting an amp soon as well. My question is, do I need to buy a 2 ohm amp or a 4 ohm? I dont understand that at all, I try not to post unless im really confused, and well iam!!!!

you can get a 2ohm amp, and bridge the sub to 2ohms ( i think ) not familiar with the stats on the alpine sub.

The 12" alpine type R sub is a 300 watts rms sub, so get an amp that will run 2ohms and give you between 300-400 watts, wire the voice coils in parallel and you will be good to go

Is there somewhere on here that shows you how to wire them in parrallel? And one 12" should hit good correct?

In the modifications encyclopedia. Diagrams on how to wire your subwoofer.

The Alpine Type-R comes in two versions. SWR-1242D and SWR-1222D I believe. One has dual 4 ohm coils and can be wired a 2 or 8 ohm load. The other has dual 2 ohm coils and can be wired to a 1 or 4 ohm load. I know it may sound confusing, but it's really not. It's really important that we are certain on which model you have before we can make a solid recommendation on an amp.

And yes, one 12" Type-R will bump along nicely.

Aww yes thanks for that correction, I had forgotten about the dual 2ohm version, a little harder to find in stores, but they do make them. And you are more than correct the Apline Type R kicks some massive bass and quite clean also. I would say it compares to alot of subs from 200-300$...

Hi all, its the 1242D RMS 500 peak 1500, also do you think a ported or sealed box would work better? What does the dual voice coil mean anyway?? sorry for all the questions, just want to make sure system sounds good, thanks.....

Hahaha I know what you mean man. Life isn't cheap.

Dual voice coil just means that the sub has two voice coils instead of one. What does that mean to you? TWO PAIR of + and -'s. This increases wiring flexibility for the consumer. More options on how to wire the subwoofer(s) to the amp. With a one 12" dual 4 ohm sub, your choices are 2 or 8 ohms.

That's how you will want to wire your subwoofer to the amp. This will put a nominal load of 2 ohms on your amp.

So you will be looking for a monoblock (single channel) amp. One that does around 500W RMS into a 2 ohm load. So in the specs you're looking for 500WRMS x 1 @ 2ohms. Get it?
Here's a good example. The Audiobahn A8000T does 800WMRSx1@2ohms. Plenty for your Type-R. And for about $135 shipped. Many people hate on Audiobahn. They say that the amps don't output power they should etc. Well, I'll agree that they probably fall a little short. But I bet you still pull 650-700WRMS of clean power out of the A8000T. Plenty for you. Truth is, Audiobahn is king when it comes to quality vs. power vs. price.
