  • 8 ohm speaker's

Hey someone please educate me with 8 ohm speaker's. I hooked them up with the monsoon deck and they sound great and loud. What i did was i took the deck out of my camaro which is totaled and installed it in my jeep which run 8 ohm speaker's. They sounded greta why can we not use 4 ohm speakers they claim they won't sound good i'm not to sure this is entirely true anymore
My new ride 2000 camaro, No mods yet still waiting for warranty to run out then all out heads, cam, and supercharger

The ohm rating of a speaker is the impedance of the speaker. It's basicly the measure of the resistance & inductive reactance.

In electronics, ohms law states that Voltage = Current * Resistance, which can be changed around to say Current = Voltage/Resistance (I=V/R). Also, in electronics, power can be calculated by multiplying Voltage and Current (P=V*I)

Keeping EVERYTHING constant but the resistance will effectivly halve your power output, because if resistance doubles, current is cut in half, and when current is cut in half whilst voltage stays constant, power is therefore half.

Using 8ohm speakers will effecitvely cut your power in half if the stereo is designed for 4 ohm speakers, which will cause you to tend to want to turn the volume up higher to compensate, which will cause the stereo to work harder to compensate for the higher volume levels. Stereos amplifiers are designed to work in a certian impedance range, and if you go outside of that the stereo can be damaged (putting too low of an impedance, i.e. a 2 ohm load on a 4 ohm circuit) or can impede the performance (putting too high of an impedance, i.e. an 8 ohm load on a 4 ohm circuit)

For best performance, I'd recommend, if you have the money, to replace the 8 ohmers with 4 ohmers to acheive best stereo & speaker performance.

Good luck, and I hope I helped you understand a little better
