• What kind of subs and amps should I get?

OK guys, I don't know too much about subs and amps and all of that stuff, so I was wondering if any of you guys have any ideas of what kind I should get.

    Thanks

Car stereo is like everything else in the world, you get what you pay for.

For a good compromise, I LOVE my MTX sub. I have a single 10" MTX Thunder6000 in the MTX version of the stealth box ( Thunderform ). It sounds very clean.

I have 6.5" Rockford Fosgate speakers in the back and front. I got them off of UBid for only 40 a pair. While they arent the best speakers in the world, they sound totally different ( much, much better ) from stock.

If you are doing the whole system you can do two amps ( one for sub and one for front/rear ). To save a little money you can do what I did and use a 5 channel amp instead of 2 amps. My personal favorites are Kenwood and Orion.

As far as head unit goes, buy what you like, but stay away from Sony X-plod. This is was I have now and I hate it...

You can just do a little bit at a time if you want. First get a good head unit. Second maybe add your sub and finally do the front/rear speakers.

just my opinions and everyone has their own on this kind of stuff...

I'm a huge fan of Eclipse, espically head units, and high/midrange speakers. As far as subs, I think it depends if you want that hard hit, or a smooth bass sound...but the best way to decide is to get to the sound shop and take a listen for yourself.

These other guys probably know a lot more about car audio than I do. But I've been using a Kenwood 12" 600 w capacity w/ a cheapo boss 400w amp for over a year now and it has been great...only complaint is that my car's plastic vibrates and annoys the hell out of me :)

hey man im a stereo fanatic, i used to work in a stereo shop. You want good quality thump for a sub go Rockford He2 or hx2, if you want to spend a little more money go Eclipse, but in my Convertible where all the sound leaks out my two twelve inch he2's whoop my buddies 2 12" Eclipse alluminums, i have a bigger amp but still. If you want to spend really good money on a really good amp go Micro Dimension Pro 8.1 800w rms, itll run two twelves perfect with juice left. As for a head unit, Clarion has been the best for me, i have gone throught at least 8 decks, and my clarion has been the best so far. :D

Obviously, the more you spend on each component, the better quality you're going to get but that doesn't mean it's going to match your music preference. I like clean and crisp tunes and I think the biggest mistake everyone makes with their "systems" is that they flood all sound out with bass. If you hook a sub and amp combo up to your stereo and just call it good, odds are you're going to kill your sound quality. The mids need upgraded, the HU needs upgraded... it's a package deal and you need to figure out what kind of "package" suits you best. Another thing commonly overlooked is your wiring... if you're running a good amount of power, you need to have some high grade cables supplying the power where it's needed. If you have cheap radio shack speaker wire, how do you expect the most out of your stereo?

The biggest stereo isn't always "better," so you need to figure out what kind of set up you want. Some car audio shops are great help and others are crap. and saving money will never go out of style... if you look around, you'll find some killer deals on top of the line components.
