  • How to install sub and amp...

What all is involved with installing a sub and an amp. Replaced my bose system with a new headunit and pioneer speakers. I was wondering what all has to be done to add an amp and sub in the back, and the variations in price. I don't need much, just a little thump, so I guess one 10" will be sufficient. How much wiring is it etc. What does the amp get plugged into, etc.. 94 camaro with ttops. Also, can I mount the sub box in the flat surface in the hatch between the back seat and the little ttops trunk area. Is that a bad idea?

You can put a box for a 10 on the deck behind the rear seat if you want to. It's more of a security issue with some of us. In other words, we like to hide our stuff from sight.

For installing an amp and sub, you need to run a power cable from the battery back to the amp. You need to ground the amp in the back somewhere. You need to run a set of RCA's and a remote turn on from the HU back to the amp. Certain kinds of RCA's have a built in wire for the turn-on lead. All that's left is to run speaker wire to the sub. Relatively simple. A while back, I posted a rather lengthy explanation of how I ran all my cables. I'll look for it again. Just be sure not to run the RCA's anywhere near your power cable. Hope that helps. Be sure to check out the bass enclosures I make for f-bods.
    BTW, here's that link.

Why can't you run the rca's near the power wire?

Sometimes your signal wires will pick up distortion from the electricity in the power lead. This is always disputed, but I never take the chance so I separate them as much as possible.
