custom 12' enclosure

so im off for spring break andi want to try and get this done this week. I have a 12' punch with a sony 480W xplode amp. Any suggestions on how to build a box would be great. like dimensions and such. Ive already done a search and couldnt find much, plus the calculation sites ive been to are asking for all these figures that i dont know really anything about. any helpwould be great! thanx

What do you want? It's only one 12". You could just build a plain square box if you really wanted.... or are you looking for something smooth? Make yourself a fiberglass/MDF stealth box. Probably cost you $50-$60.

im not looking for a stealth box but a full rear well enclosure. I was gonna indent the 12er in the center of the well and also indent the amp along with it next to the sub. I am not sure what material to use or what the dimensions of the enclosure should be....any helpwould be great

Sorry. I don't have specific figures for something like that. Measure twice and cut once. You'll be using 1/2" Medium Density Fiberboard. Sorry. :(

Do you have a model number for the Punch woofer you have? I'll see if I can find some parameters for you.

I would do like 96firebird311 suggested and build a simple square/rectanglur box. You should be able to use 3/4" MDF for the box, at least I was able to when I did a similar setup in a 3rd gen. Camaro I once had. If you want to indent "flush mount" the woofer and amp, one easy way would be to make a 1/4" or 1/2" thick trim panel covered in carpeting (with a cutout just big enough for the amp and also with a cutout for the full diameter of the sub) and lay it on top.

If you never worked with MDF, I would recommend predrilling the screw holes for the box itself and for the woofer mounting holes. MDF tends to want to split if you just drive the screws right in.

Pilot holes are a must. [img]smile.gif[/img] And with a single low power 12" such as that, 1/2" MDF should be plenty strong enough. Save a couple bucks and a few pounds and go with 1/2".

ok the model is rockford fosgate punchZ, i cant find a model number anywhere but yea so let me get this right here, i should build a square box and then cover the rest of the entire well flush with the top of the box?? im just trying to picture this and cant seem to do it. i want it to look relatively smooth on the outside, sorry im such a dumbass in this area, i can put an engine together but dont know jack about boxes

The pic below should give you a better idea. I just built the box big enough to fit wayyy down deep inside the trunk well and placed that grey carpeted board over top.

From what info I could find, it looks like the 12" Punch Z came in either a single 4-Ohm or single 8-Ohm voice coil version. Power handling is 150watts RMS with a "sealed" box volume of (1.0 to 1.75) cubic feet. The ideal box size Rockford recommends is 1.25 cubic feet.

I don't know much about Rockford subs but it appears to be one of their entry level subs. Hopefully, you have the 4-Ohm version since you only plan on using one.

thnx for looking that up for me, so nda....is the area underneath the top of that box the exact box area u need? I am going to to want that same box only flush with the rear shelf, basically raised up. so should i just make a bx that is about 1.25 cubic inches and just cover the entire thing to make he well cover or what??

I outlined in red on the pic how big the box itself actually is under the carpeted panel. It's been so long ago but I think the box was only 1 cubic feet (was using a 12" MTX Black Gold sub).

Since you want your box up higher, I would just build a 1.25 cubic foot box and extend the sides of the box on the bottom as extentions to keep the box raised up to where you want it. Should only take a few hours to make something like that
