  • New speaker cost?

I might be buying a 2002 Camaro soon and it doesn't have the Monsoon sound system. Obviously, the factory system kind of blows so I'd like to start off by replacing the factory speakers. How much can I expect to spend on replacing all 4 (6?) speakers with a middle-of-the-line brand? Or would it be smarter to start with a new head unit?

I think anyone who knows anything about this stuff would agree that your door speakers will be the heart of your system, so get a good set and do it right the first time. I have RF Fanatic Q components in the doors and Alpine Type S 2-ways in the backseat, all running from a RF 4 channel amp. The RF components cost me about $220 shipped, the Alpines were about $65-$70, and the amp was about $150. It's not top-of-the-line stuff, but I love it. So for a decent setup I'd say anywhere from $300 to $500, and more if you're going with a new head unit. I started with the Pioneer direct-fit headunit, which I highly recommend. If you count my headunit, speakers, amps, box, and subs, mine cost around $1,200 total. Hope this helps.

Speakers that fit are 6.5'' or 6.75''. For the front i reccomend a set of components. For the front i also suggest you get some quality components because this is where most of the sound will come from.

For the rear where the passengers sit you can fit 6.5'' or 6.75''. Or you can fit 6*9s, personally i have 6*9s and they sound great.

If your looking for imaging and all that then get a 4 channel amp. If you could care less about fade and balance then get a 2 ch amp and run the amp at 2 ohms.

Also buy an aftermarket HU it will sound a lot better than the factory Delco or what ever it is.

Might as well do it right and run some quality RCA's spend $20 or so on the RCA's. Some 14 gauge speaker wire should be fine to run the speakers.

Your also going to need some wire for the amp, either 8 or 4 gauge will work.

i think the cdt coaxials would work for the rear and they are cheap as well (and they are pretty nice from what i have heard in my friends blazer).

How is the quality of Pioneer speakers? I found a pair of Pioneer 6.5s at Circuit City for $79/pair. How necessary is it for me to use an amp if I get a decent head unit? Is the stock head unit strong enough to power some aftermarket speakers?

For $79 or less, go with the Alpine 2-ways. You'll be glad you did.
