are you sure it burned out? Did you check underneath? A lot of times the bulb falls out of its mount and it just looks like it burnt out.

Remove upper console by backing out (2) 7mm bolts from underneath flip top (under change thing). I can't remember if you need to remove the shifter knob, if you do, get some pliers and remove the staple inserted in the front of it and pull the knob right off. The rest just snaps out I think. You will see the socket underneath, twist it out, and pull the tiny bulb straight out. It may not seem like it comes out, but it does, trust me. The bulb is number 74 availible at any auto parts store. The same bulb is used in those tiny lights that light up the power window/lock/mirror switches at night. You might check to see if those are burnt out too.

You don't need to remove the shifter; just set the parking brake and move the shifter into neutral. Unbolt the screws under the change holder (I used a set of thin vise grips since I don't have a metric socket set) and lift up the lid of the console. You should have enough room to see if the little holder has come unscrewed or not. Mine did, and I didn't need a new bulb - I just screwed the light back in and that was that. Only thing I don't like is that the lower end of the shifter is brighter than the upper end - why didn't they just put the light in the middle of the shifter is beyond me.
