I had this same problem, you can buy a set of resistors from radioshack to solve this problem, I did it and it works just fine turns the speaker into a 2 ohm....I forget the name or even how I wired it, but I know it works...sorry I couldnt be more help, but this problem doesnt require you buying a new head unit...save some money ;)

most radios will put out about a 45 watt peak per channel, when you play your music at a volume lower than when it distorts you are using about 25 watts.

nope not gonna work a resistor increases resistance so that is NOT gonna send a 2ohm load. more like a 5+ohm load. one thing i do understand is electrical work. i had to study it for 6 months at my auto class.
help me build the ultimate sleeper soon ill have a lot more mods than i can list and watch out for the spikes. 02 firebird

actually if you wire a 4ohm resistor across the terminals of the speaker it WILL drop the resistance down to 2 ohms, but i don't think it will make it louder, just make the resistor warm. Make sure its like a 20 watt or higher resister.

ok, i just got my new head unit and ran straight wires to the front speakers and stock wiring to the rear speakers, but now, the rear speakers are way too quiet to even hear and the stock subs arent working! whats happening?

You clearly don't understand how a paralell circuit works then. Go back and review Chapter 1 where they introduce the difference between series and paralell wiring.

For paralell resistance, you add reciprocals:

              1/4Ohms + 1/4Ohms = 1/Output

I'll let you solve for Output. Megahertz is right though, that's gonna be one HOT resistor.
