I asked this question just in passing on another topic, but I thought I would throw it out there for anyone else who didn't drop in on the discussion. I have a Monsoon system (this is where some say, "sorry to hear that") and the backlight, or whatever that lights up the main display for AM/FM/and CD station frequency or cut selection is blacked out. Is that accessable and is it as I suspect, a single bulb. I know that when the sunlight hits directly on the display, you can read the station frequency or time on the clock, so I know that the display is working. Somebody...anybody? There is a write up on how to change the bulbs in the stock stereo. That may be a bulb bheind it as I know my LCD odometer is lit up by a bulb. Might as well check before you dish out for a new stereo. The writeup is in the Review Submissions part of the site.

          Hey Camarowidbass!
My stereo is a different animal from the one in the link you provided. Mine is the unit from the 96 firebird with the display on the left and the controls set up differently. I did not see where the access for the digital readout bulb could be changed. Is there another link that coul maybe help. Thanks for sending the other one. It really did help me get a feel for what I could expect when I cracked it open. I just really need to see how, if any way to access the readout before I look into another stereo. If I do go that route...is thee an aftermarket unit that anyone knows of that can employ our steering wheel stereo controls?

If you want to continue to use the steering wheel controls, make sure the "aftermarket" stereo comes with a remote control. On top of that, you'll need a device made by PAC that allows you to program your steering wheel controls to work with the aftermarket stereo.
