I need to mount my amps on the flat part right above the fuel tank. I was wondering if there is any room between that flat spot and the top of the gas tank. I need to screw it down so it could be covered on insurance in case it is stolen . Right now I have it velcroed just so it doesn't slide around. I did a search and couldn't come up with anything. Thanks

build a rack

I've heard of people screwing things down. From what I hear, there is a small amount of clearance between the metal decking and the tank itself. If you decide to fasten anything down, do not penetrate by more than 1/4 to 1/2". Maybe someone can verify this.

I'm gonna have to disagree with Mega on this one... (yes, write it down on the calendar it's not something that happens very often). There's no space at all. Why risk it? Just put a piece of wood up there under the carpet and screw the amp to the wood. Build an amp rack for somewhere else like the back wall, but don't set your self up to make a big mess my trying to drill directly to the tank. That's expensive to get fixedMike
\'99 Z28 LS1 (383 in the works) M6
stereo pics Almost sold, the amps are still for sale - make an offer.
Help Mike pay for his engine. If there's no space, how do they connect the baby seat straps on the 98ups. I've got a 97 so I wouldn't now. I guess they could be welded.
I once saw a guy with a large circular amp screwed down to the hump. I didn't smell any gas when I checked it out. I wouldn't screw into it though without being 100% sure.

Exactly. If you peel the carpet back and look closely, the metal part of the deck is ribbed. It has low spots and high spots. If you put short screws thru the high spots, you'd be fine. This is probably how the cargo holds are fastened with the torx screws on the newer cars. But hey, if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But by looking at my car a few mins. ago a couple short screws thru the high ribs would not bother me a bit.
As for mounting surfaces, I agree that a carpeted board would be better than the deck. Better yet, put some spacers under the board to run all the wires and drill holes and poke them up thru the board. Peace
