is it true that a box doesn't need to be vented and that the tighter the seal of the subs the better the sound? Someone told me to even lay down a bead of caulk around the subs so it's nice and tight. any thoughts on this?

Seal or not to Seal Box

You definately want a tight seal between the sub and the box. Although caulk is a bit extreme and messy if you plan to remove them. Some subs come with a paper or thin rubber gasket for this purpose. But most times just getting the mounting screws tight is adequate enough. When drawn up tight, even box carpet or vinyl will provide the seal.

It depends on what you want your music to sound like. I prefer tight, accurate bass so I went with a small sealed box. Vented boxes are usually louder and "boomier". Vented boxes also need to be larger to work properly. If you've got the manual that came with your sub, it might recommend different dimensions for different box types. My Infinity Kappa, and my old JBL's came with this type of "box guide." They showed response curves and box sizes. Search the web about building sub boxes. Or check out www.subthump.com.
