How would you go about removing the stock head unit on a camaro? I want to temporarily splice into my wires to test out an after market system. Are there any hidden screws?

do not "pry" off anything. open the glove box and theres 3 bolts to take off then take off the big panel under the steering wheel and there will be another 3 bolts to take off then the trim plate will come off then there will be about 3 screws or bolts holding onto the HU.- Scarface

96 Camaro 3.8 - Y87, SLP CAI, Flowmaster 80series, 180* Thermo, Cut-out

why in the world would you go through all that? the trim comes right off and theres three little bolts holding it in, undo the three bolts and the head unit comes right out\'97 Pontiac Firebird A4 3.08/open
Best 60ft.: 2.411 Best 1/8: 10.262 @ 69.726 Best 1/4: 15.941 @ 87.48
Mods: SLP CAI, Loudmouth, Test Pipe

i guess on a firebird but on a camaro the bolts are under the cover plate, and to get the cover plate off you have to do what i said.- Scarface

96 Camaro 3.8 - Y87, SLP CAI, Flowmaster 80series, 180* Thermo, Cut-out

i see 10 times more camaros out on the orads than firebirds but whatever floats your boat, i mean yeah thats totally logical - buying a car over another for reasons such as that.- Scarface

96 Camaro 3.8 - Y87, SLP CAI, Flowmaster 80series, 180* Thermo, Cut-out

Well, since his sig shows a 1994 camaro--Do Not pry anything. The older camaros don't have "pry-off" trim. The bezel is held in place by several screws. Three are inside the glove box and the rest are hidden beneath that panel under the steering wheel. You have to take at least one or two of those out and drop the plate down just to get acces to the last few screws. Once the bezel is off, you will see a couple more screws that are holding the HU in place.
For all I know, the older firebirds may be the same. In my '95, the HU is located below the A/C controls. And in the newer cars, the HU is above the A/C controls. So it makes sense that when these were switched, that GM also went to the new pop-off trim plate. I could be wrong. But I doubt this is a camaro vs. firebird issue. HTH

somebody needs to get a sense of humor...and there's a reason you see so many more Camaros out on the road...cheaper...Firebirds are more exclusive and have better interiors...not to mention they look better \'97 Pontiac Firebird A4 3.08/open
Best 60ft.: 2.411 Best 1/8: 10.262 @ 69.726 Best 1/4: 15.941 @ 87.48
Mods: SLP CAI, Loudmouth, Test Pipe

yeah megabass i have a 96 and its the same way. and rick m. that is totally your opinion and that great but i think the reason there are more camaros out there is because THEY look better bud. i dont see how they have better interiors but oh well im not looking for an arguement here, just opinions. ;)- Scarface

96 Camaro 3.8 - Y87, SLP CAI, Flowmaster 80series, 180* Thermo, Cut-out

I wouldn't say cheaper. Maybe less expensive; for practically the same car.
