  • Bose Sound System To Amp

Ok heres the deal; I have a '96 Camaro with a Bose upgrade factory sound system. I bought a line level adaptor thingy to add RCA outputs to my factory system so that I can add an amp. I removed all the panels to get to the radio (it just dosent pop out like alot of people say). And when I removed the radio all the wires were different colors then what is posted on the wiring diagram of this site. So I had no clue what to do. So I put it all together again without doing anything. So I went down to Circuit City this morning, and asked them what I needed and they said that I needed a converter (which I already have). But they said that it needed to be hooked up after the factory amp, otherwise it wouldnt work. I have no clue what to do. I know nothing about audio and this is my first time trying this. I was thinking of having Circuit City doing it but I cant justify spending $50 on something that I might be able to do. ANY and ALL help would be greatly appreciated. I need to know where to put this and which wires are which.
    Thanks in advance!

that doesn't make any sense... The RCA preouts are for your amp hookup, so why would it go after the amp? If you wanted to know my opinion, there should be an auxillary port in the back if you have the bose system to where you can hook the rca preouts up, but I'd just suggest getting a new deck personally.

I read your other post about wanting to know how to remove your factory stereo. You need to be more specific in terms of letting people know what you have, such as telling us what you have: either a Camaro OR a Firebird...and also the year. The responses given in the other post were not incorrect, they were simply responses on how to remove a stereo from a "Firebird."

And when I removed the radio all the wires were different colors then what is posted on the wiring diagram of this site.
The color codes listed on this site are only for the standard factory stereo and the Monsoon. Although the "Monsoon" system uses a separate factory amp, the wires behind the stereo in the dash are exactly the same as just a standard factory stereo...the color codes match. The factory "Bose" system is a completely different set up all together, this is why none of the colors matched. I don't even think the "Bose" factory headunit has any built in power, I "think" the Bose system uses separate amps located at each speaker location (someone who really knows the bose system please chime in here). If this is the case, then tapping your hi-to-low level adapter will need to take place after the factory amp(s). If you had a Monsoon system, I would tap into the wiring before the factory amp.

This is exactly what the guy at Circuit City was talking about, hooking it up after the amp. Are these amps located with the speakers? Or somewhere else?
        Thanks

There should be a speaker (factory sub) wayyyyyy in the back of the hatch. (should be an oval grill about the size of a 6x9) Theres an amp indside there but I think it only drives just that speaker. As far as the other speakers go, I think theres a tiny amp located behind each speaker itself. (behind the magnet assembly) Again I'm not 100% sure because I've never messed around with the bose systems before. I guess it don't matter where the amp(s) are, just remove the factory speakers and tap directly into where the "terminals" on the back of the speakers are. This way you know you have made your connections after any amps if you go right to the speaker. Sorry I couldn't be anymore help.

yea, both amps will have to be connected with the adapter then.

So both left and right stock amps will have to be connected to one line converter?
