Popping? not blown, a flutter?

I would definately stay with a ported box. If it's built exactly to the specs, it should be louder than a sealed box.

Sealed boxes can play deeper and more accurately.

Ported boxes are louder, but have a tuned frequency, and don't need as much watts to sound as loud. Generally, they can be about 3 decibels louder(twice the output) as a sealed box... oh yeah, but they're usually quite larger than a sealed box. :eek:

Not always true with certain subs. Especially 3 db. A lot of subs run better in sealed because that is what they are made for. I've heard W6's in both, and I actually like the sound of the sealed better. As for plugging the ports, no. A sealed box would have different dimensions. You'd have to meter both ported and sealed to find the louder of the two. Also, have you tried flipping the box and running them down firing or back firing. You might get a lot more resonation out of the hatch. Just try some more box placements. Also, with a sealed box you will get higher volume levels with less clipping. Obviously it is harder for the sub to hit maximum excursion under a pressurized sealed box. Also, note that the W6 DOESN'T have a ported pole piece. That's one reason I like the W3's better. They don't clip as easily. That's where a lot of the waffling comes from.

Well, I posted for some help over at CZ28.com. There is a real professional over there that I specificall wanted to know his take on this so I had him look at this post. Here's what he had to say. And I quote.

"Without actually being able to hear this popping noise it's hard to say for sure what it is. If the sub were bottoming out it would be a loud CRACK rather than just popping. When a sub bottoms out and slams the VC into the back plate it normally will scare the crap out of you.

Since this is a ported enclosure it makes me think that he might need a subsonic filter. When a ported enclosure plays bass that is below the tuning of the enclosure the sub tends to flap out of control. A subsonic filter removes these ultra low frequencies and prevents this from happening. This is another reason why I prefer sealed boxes over ported. The air inside the enclosure works sort of like a spring and helps keep the cone's motion under control.

There's an outside possibility that there is something wrong with the amp but I kinda doubt it. If he could borrow an amp from a friend he could give that a try.

There's also the possibility that the sub is bad too.

These are just guesses on my part. I would have to be able to hear this noise for myself to get a better idea of what the problem might be."

Anyone have an opinion of this subsonic filter idea. Perhaps you could try that v6maro.

I've never heard of a sealed enclosure playing louder than a ported one. True some subs are designed specifically for sealed or for ported enclosures, but plugging the ports off is gonna take away some of the boom from the subs and that's why we did the ported box to begin with. Maximum slam.

As for speakers that sound louder in sealed boxes opposed to ported; have you ever ran Kicker XPL 12's in a ported enclosure. They waffle like crazy and poop out around 80 db. Seal em up, and the output is amazingly better. (small enclosure). Most subs with heavy cones hit x-max too easy in ported enclosures, they peak out higher in SPL in sealed. Plus, it just sounds better. I guess it's taste, but I've seen higher meter readings with some sealed enclosures with certian subs.
As for the subsonic filter, you're absolutely correct. It blocks the inaudible (20 hz and below)frequencies which can cause this. I'd just run them in a sealed enclosure. It's much easier, and i like the sound better. It's preference I guess.
Like I said before, plugging the ports would be a huge mistake. And yes, it would have a decreased output. It would be necessary to rebuild a smaller enclosure.

I guess I'm partial to ported boxes! :cool: I like the way it sounds! Plus one of my co-workers hit around 145 db's with three ported 10W6's.

I sampled some at a store here. They had two 12W6's in a sealed box, and a bandpass box. And they had 10W6's in a ported box. The 10's sounded louder (and cleaner) in my opinion.

Yeah, it's mostly opinion. My friend (MECP certified professional installer) has a single Solobaric ten in a box he designed in Mobile Dynamics (stereo school in Toronto) and it peaks at 144.4 db. With the 500/1 mono JL(same amp as above). It's amazing. It's the only ported box I've ever fallen in love with.
And Steve. Turn up the filter. If it's all the way down, it's letting those low frequencies through that cause the waffling. If you turn it up a few hertz, it should cut down on it. Just do it until it sounds good.
