Relocating Head Unit / Cd Player

I'd like to relocate my cd player to the right passenger side right below the airbag. I have a custom molded lcd screen that's going in where the cd player used to be. I know I might lose the airbag by doing this. Any idea's on how I would be able to fit it in? Mounting it, I would assume, would be the biggest problem. Here's a pic of where I'd like it to go.

I've also thought about mounting it in the middle of the airbag panel on the passenger side. Any thoughts/ideas are greatly appreciated.

I dont get it. If the head unit is not important why even have it visible? why not just mount it hanging down from the dash at maybe your knees on the pass side. Similar to the OBD connection? Or even in your glove box. And if it is important why move it all the way to the pass. side where you'd have to climb over the center consol and the seat just to have access to it.

The hardest part will not be mounting it. It will be extending all the wires to get them over to where you relocated it. With where you want it now all you'd have to do it take the airbag out, cut a din sized rectangle then use a universal din mounting kit. But at the angle it looks like you want it, its going straight into your glove box. Otherwize it will not be flush with your dash.

I think you'd be happier putting it out of sight like coffe said, you center console might work good for that ;)

Mounting it WILL be the hardest part. What's so difficult about extending the wires?

Don't know exactly what you're going for with this....... but how about mounting the FACEPLATE somewhere close by, then use ribbon cable to connect it to the headunit which is stored somewhere out of site. It's been done several times before. Faceplate mounted in the driver's visor.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies. First off the head unit is important to me, I'm installing an LCD(for a PS2) but I'll still need a way to play music and listen to the radio. I've considered mounting just the faceplate and hiding the base of the unit under the drivers side seat or something like that. If I had my way I'd still like to mount the entire cd player on the right passenger side. I'd rather anyone could insert a cd ya know?

My main concern is how I can go about mounting it. There arent any brackets I can bolt into and the weight of the cd player would tilt the end downwards and angle the faceplate upwards. Any more responses would be greatly appreciated. I'm not trying to be difficult with this, just would like to hear all of your suggestions.

if the screen is just gonna be for ps2, and you will continue to use the HU everyday, I HIGHLY recommend staying away from the pass side, thats a safety concern. Try doing 70mph and reaching over there, no thankyou.....you could also try relocating you a/c controls to your glove/center console....then you would only have to extend that, and mount your HU where the A/c used to be...much cleaner IMO...have you considered visor mount screens, I have a feeling your really not going to use the PS2 that much.

the center control area is not a good spot for a LCD. That area gets many glares making it very hard to see during the day. Ask the few people that put carputers in their fbody. 2 people that I know of ended up building fiberglass 'hoods' to shield the LCD from the light. Plus the angle of that spot to you and the passengers will make playing video games hard. I really suggest putting the LCD on the pass. side visor. Keep the HU where it is. Nikon's plan is next best.

I think the best way would be to mount it in the glove box, but use the monsoon steering wheel to change stations/volume/band/all basic functions. I mean, changing cds will be a *****, but you're going to have trouble with that anywhere you mount it that isn't in the center console.

he doesnt have steering wheel controls, if that pic is of his car at least....and ya coffee is right the visors are the best, I have two 6.5's in mine, albeit they never get used but if your in a show off mood they're cool...thats why I kinda think your wasting your money with this, now if your sitting in your car alot waiting or something go for it, but you'll be happier with it in the visor and your neck wont hurt either.....mounting the screen in the dash where you want has the "cool" factor but isnt very practical unless it's a carputer......you might wanna rethink all of this I could've spent 500$ on something much better than the stupid screens.

id like to see it done, lol, it would be kinda funny to smash on the brakes and have ur passengers head change the radio station, or even better mount it higher, so if you get in a wreck, your head unit will launch out like a jet fighter pilot ejecting out of his plane, even hook a little parachute up to it... lol, but seriously, you could do this, i dont really think it would be that tough, but why not just buy a high quality dvd player/cd player with video inputs and hook ur ps2 thru that...
