  • Calling everyone with LCD headunit.....

i am still in the market looking for a lcd headunit. so , i head over to crutchfield.com to see what deal they have. now, when i put my car information in, it kept saying i need to modify my car...wtf...here's the text:

» Caution! You will need to modify your vehicle to install this product. We strongly recommend contacting a Crutchfield Sales Advisor to discuss your installation and your options.
» Extension kit -- when installed, the radio will protrude from the dash by 1/2".
» Unbolt or cut out the factory stereo's rear support bracket to make room for your new receiver.

Q.1: so, if my lcd "protrude" from my dash it wont look good. does it even protrude or they are bs'ing? i need to see some picture from the fellow members who have lcd in their camaro or firebird......please....i need to make decision on this ...let me know ...

i am looking at this one http://www.crutchfield.com/S-fhd2xu6...50&I=110VM9410 since it's only 550 and they will send me everything with a 1 year warranty and they will guide me through installation. this is option one .... or

i can buy this one from ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/HT-900-7-TFT-SWI...ayphotohosting but it wont come with any warranty or install kit.....

Q.2: which path should i go? my budget is at or around $500.....so if you guys know any site or link or someone, let me know ...thanks...

well, ive had a motorized dvd player in my car already, and it had no problem with just a stock installation kit for a regular head unit. theres plenty of room in camaro dash's for it..i dont see any reason for an extension and the need for it to protrude that much...umm...and as for which one to buy...my personal opinion would be neither, but if youre choosing...DEFINITLY buy the Jenson over some no name brand on ebay, they dont really compete with the quality of pioneer or alpine, but its better than some one off brand on ebay, another thing to think about is that you could get a top of the line head unit for what your paying for a low end dvd player, with those dvd players youre looking at, you wont have much control over your audio system, as in theres not many available adjustments, unlike a top of the line head unit, whereas you have unlimited ability to tune your system. let us know what you decide, good luck.

I went a little over your budget with pioneer, and it does stick out a little. I'll take pictures tonight. There is an installation kit for pioneer which sticks it in 10mm, which is about .4 inches... from .5 inches.. I can deal with it sticking out .1. I'll let you know how it all goes.

You could always go with a 7" or 8" LCD and a carputer (save money and build it yourself) and have the best of all worlds ... DVD, GPS, wireless internet (pointless in my opinion, OBDII diognostics etc., awesome audio controls (5.1 or 7.1) and plenty of tunes / movies stored on the HDD. Just a thought, I'm in the process of putting it all together for my Bird.

Also, moving from monsoon to aftermarket, i don't need anything special (other than wire harness kit and antenna kit) ..do i?

I don't have the 10mm kit yet, but I'm going to buy it. That's probably the worst it's ever going to look, as it would be 10mm more in once I install the kit. I'm pretty sure that my system sticks out the furthest out of anyone's, it's pretty massive. So, take mine as "worst case scenario", becuase I doubt anyone else is going to have it any further.

96firebird311: how are you burning mp3s on a dvd? What format? file system? I've tried with the AVIC-N3 but it's not working. The manual says it only plays mp3s off CDR, but I figure dI could get around it somehow. Any help?

                            (sorry to hijack the thread)

Re: Calling everyone with LCD headunit.....

Cutting the dash mount is very very easy. It's just a little nub in the back of the dash mount that does nothing anyways. If you get the Humount bracket your HU will sit almost flush with the rest of your dash plus it has LEDs that light up whatever wording you like in whatever color. Pretty sweet! And its very good quality, hand made stuff.

Even if you cut the dash mount, if you use a lot of the available brackets it will still stick out and look like crap. I don't know of any other flush mounting brackets out that besides Humount.

I'm currently in the process of swapping out my original bracket with the Humount. I've run into a bit of trouble with the wiring, but that should be sorted out very very soon. I'll post pics of the thing you have to cut off as well as the finished product.
