I am thinking of getting a new stereo with a USB port on the front. I was wondering what the limits are. It says that it will take a thumb drive, but will it also take something like this... http://cgi.ebay.com/40GB-USB-Mini-Th...QQcmdZViewItem

The stereo that I am looking to buy is the Kenwood DPX-501. I just want to know how far I can go... could I put an DC-AC inverter on the car and run a hard drive full of songs? See what I mean? I think that 40GB will be fine, but I was just wondering if anyone else has done anything like this, or do you just plug in your iPods.

Well first off.... the DPX-501 is a double din unit. The f-bodies have a 1.5 din opening. Not gonna happen without some serious fab work.

Yeah, I know it's double din. I had a double in there before it was stolen. I just had to trim down the top and bottom of the bezel, and dremel out some of the back... to get it to fit flush with bezel. The only thing that looked gheto was the gap between the sides and the bezel, because the bezel is curved, there was at most a ¼" gap. The stock bolt locations were used.

Now, any word on large UBS drives on this type of stereo?

Yeah, it lined up nice. It was a flipdown also, so you could load a CD or tape. There wasn't any bare metal sticking out, ewwww. I don't think I would want to put another one in if it was that bad.

If there was ever a time to call the manufacturer to get a straight answer, this is one of them.

:) Yeah, I guess so. I talked to a guy at Crutchfield, and he was saying that it might not have the power to spin the drive. I just wanted to see if anyone has ever tried it. I would trust someone who has done it, comparied to someone who's looking out for their company. I can imagine Kenwood will recommend just a thumb drive. That way they are covered just in case something goes wrong and I come back and say their tech said it would work. Oh, well.
