  • need help hard wiring radar

Im working on hard wiring my radar detector into my car and my original plan was just to use the hot/ground that came into my rearview mirror for the reading/map lights.

Im still learning electrical, so bare with me please. Oh and just so you know, I have a 1993 v6 camaro.

There are 3 wires coming into the rear view. A black-hot, red-neutral, and white-ground correct?

So technically all I should need to do is splice the black and white wires and run them into my radar...?

Somebody also suggested just running a wire from my fuse box, but to be honest I dont really know how.

    Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.

    Heres what you'll wanna do.

Your definitally going to want to put an inline fuse to the detector... Mine just burnt up the other day on my way to toledo cause it shorted out and i didnt have a fuse. You can buy a fuse holder at radioshack, and then just put the fuse in there that came in the cig lighter plug for the radar detector.

What I did was wire mine into my cigarette lighter. Just take out that part of the center console. Theres 2 wired going to the cig lighter. Figure out which one is hot, and which is ground. At this point, splice your wire for the detector into these 2 wires. It would also be a good idea to put a switch on the hot wire somewhere so that you can just turn it off by flipping the switch. The run the wires up to your radar, and plug it in. If you have any questions just ask, im not sure if i explained this very thouroghly... im kinda drunk

Heres what i did: Cut off the 12v plug in, splice the wires. Run the power to a fuse in ur fuse box, look at the diagram and pick one. Run the ground to some sort of bolt or screw under the dash. This way the radar turns on when the car is turned on. I did this to mine 3 years ago and it still works perfect. Mines installed on top of the dash right above the tach. Just my .02

To install to fuse just strip the power wire and wrap it around a prong of the fuse and plug the fuse in. The ground can be thread around a screw (make sure its on metal tho)

        .
I would use a dvm, unless you have the schematics ( wire diagram )..
but yes, you can get your power from there, but like said before make sure to use a fuse..
The cigarette lighter plug has a fuse in that, now your eliminating that so replace with an inline.

Im not sure what the red, white or black wires are...
You would think red would be hot, black would be ground and white would be a switched wire or something but who knows.

tycar86- i put a switch in so i could quickly turn off the radar detector if i got pulled over. You dont want that thing beeping while hes at your window talking to you.

yea, the one time i got pulled over, it was right after i hardwired it with the switch. The thing was going nuts and i was going the speed limit anyways, but i got pulled over for no front plate. Soon as i saw the lights flashing behind me i flipped off the detector, the switch being under the dash within easy reach, and teh detector is up by the rearview. He had no clue that i had one.
