  • Buying an AMP

I'll be buying a 4 channel amp sometime soon for my Camaro. I bought & installed 4 Alpine Type-R 200w 6.5" speakers, and now I'd like to upgrade the old Sony 300w 4-ch amp I installed back in March of 2000. I'd like to have a bit more "PuNcH". I am looking through ebay HERE, but I cannot decide which is a decent brand, and which is junk. Can someone please give me some recommendations within those amps? I can spend about $230.

That Kicker sx700.4 should do fine its $239 with free shipping. Kicker has some solid amps

Thats a little better. Pretty much anything there will output rated power. So look for one that outputs the power you're looking for (???RMSx4@4ohms) , maybe has certain features you're looking for (Maybe seperate HP & LP on each channel) and fits your budget. Post it up here before you buy..... think I filtered out most of the junk for ya though....:)

And that price for the SX700.4 is a factory renewed price. Most of the time ok, but it's your choice.

HAHAHA...good one! I have no idea what all of the RMS, 4 Ohm, suff is. Someone here described RMS to me, but they were basically speaking in another language because I still didn't understand afterwards.

Anyhow, thank you for filtering most of that stuff for me:tup:   I'll definately post the amp that I am looking to buy on here before I place the bid.

        Thanks for the help guys!

Read our FAQ. Pretty sure there is somethin in there for ya about this.:)

In short... RMS is continuous power. Where as peak is just for a brief second. Many companies advertise their peak power just to make their numbers look bigger.... when actually, that rating means little to nothing. Just make sure you're comparing apples to apples. RMS to RMS. If it's not listed RMS or peak... chances are good that its peak.

An amp outputs more power the lower the load. In theory, an amp will double its power output at 2 ohms as it would have output at 4 ohms. Half the load... double the power. Nearly all 6 1/2"s are 4 ohm. So you will be running your 4 speakers on 4 seperate channels. Each channel will have one 4 ohm speaker on it. SOOOOOO..... RMS power out x(by) 4 channels @(at)4 ohms...... ???RMSx4@4ohms.

            Re: Buying an AMP

So far, I have narrowed it down between these two:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MakeTrack=true (I have never heard of Hifonics, I don't know if they are good or bad amps )

            http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-INFINITY-REF...QQcmdZViewItem

I have to get ready for work now, but I'll do some more research when I get home tonight.

Both of those will suite you nicely. Hifonics is good stuff. They used to be HOT HOT in the comp scene back in the day, but they still make great stuff today. You'll be happy with either.
